In case anyone is interested and/or plan to do the same trip some day:
We left Friday at 4.30am, took the M25/M3/A303/A30 route, and with an old VW van topping at 55mph and 2 pit stops for the kids and fuel, it tooks us 6h45 to get to Newquay, with no traffic worth speaking of despite the bank holiday.
We did not encounter a single traffic jam in the 5 days we spent there and we did go to "popular" spots like Fistral beach (parked right by the sand) and the Eden project, and we also drove along the coast.
Came back yesterday, leaving at 2.30pm. Same route, one long pit stop for dinner, again no traffic jams, and the trip this time took 7h15...
And I thought the drive/route was fairly pretty and enjoyable... will do it again for sure..
