Just come back from a camp site in bakewell ,at first it was OK, but within hours it was packed solid, my view was someones car ,is there a law for how close tents can be near each other ,for fire etc because if a tent had caught fire all the rest would have too .

Haven allow 6m between tents, but I have no idea what other rules other campsites have, or if there is any law which says how far apart they must be.

I Hate sites like that, makes me feel like I am livin in  refugee camp and not camping. Not sure if there is an actual law about the distance.

We like Ninham on the Isle of Wight because its amilnly perimeter camping and the pitches are huge.  Even in August when the site is pretty much full it does not feel it.

As I've posted on a number of occasion, please do name and shame, both on this thread and in a frank, honest review on this site.

My first camp this year was on a site (Lanefoot Farm) which we very much liked but was very much over-booked. If we let each other know when campsites do this to us then we can vote with our feet and maybe, just maybe, they will change their ways.

I'm not defending some campsites, but you will find most family orientated sites by the seaside ie Cornwall like to cram them in during the busy periods. Afterall, this is how they make their money and who can blame them in this current financial climate. I don't mind people being too close as long as they are friendly. I remember our 1st time at Perranporth and being pitched in a corner which made our pitch smaller. But while we were waiting for the occupants to break camp the next door neighbours were fantastic and offered us cups of tea, and from then on we enjoyed each others company. I think if people know you have children and know you have travelled a long way like themselves they feel for you. I would also like too think that most campers have a heart and pull together when needed. I always help people who look like they are struggling or need help, but feel embarrassed when they offer alcohol as a repayment when I haven't done it for this reason.

The C&C Club have a strict 6 metre rule between units. The main reason for this is a firebreak. There is no law to say what the distance should be and a lot of greedy campsite owneres just cram you in just to increase profits.

It was the sme when we went to a site in  carnforth, the tent next to us was that close on one side, that you couldnt walk down the side of the tents. and to top it all off all they did was bloody argue. Was glad when our baby woke up in morning and started crying.17 I normally make a point of being up before her so i can gra her out of cot before she wakes the whole campsite up. But on this occasion i left her for 30 seconds.

I thought most licences were granted on the understanding there is a 6m break between outfits?

Ramming people into a field is just greed, nothing more nothing less.

We took our grandson to an all singing and dancing site which was great by the way. (Sandford Holiday Park ).

They did seem to make sure that all the tents were a good distance apart however a fence ran behind the tents and people pitched on the other side of the fence. There was no way these were far enough apart. When i put my grandson to bed the neighbours over the back may as well have been sat at the bottom of his bed. They were just talking normally but i thought this is a bit of a loop hole distance wise.

Stopped at Doone Valley Campsite last year - the tents were virtually on top of each other - because of this we left earlier than anticipated and will not be returning - I think it was a case of the more tents the more money the site would make.  This year we have booked a site with defined pitches so hopefully this will not be a problem

We used to regularly use a lovely site in Robin Hoods Bay. It was always great until we went one year in August. They had hook ups made by multi way extensions of the exisiting hook ups and the next units were so close to us their guy lines crossed ours. The two showers/3 loos each for male and female just couldnt cope. We havent been back since.

now i dont know about tents, but H&S require caravan unit to be 5 m apart from each other for fire reg's, so i would think this would be the same for tents.

I started my love of camping from the festival. Once you've camped in one of them, not having someone else's guy rope in your tent is a luxury! I love having loads of space around me and I find the best way to achieve this is by taking my dog. We have a rottweiler and any other tents near by move away. I think we've only camped once with her when we've had a tent left in the same field. She's so so lovely I just can't understand it - but it does spoil us!

Surely it's a bit shortsighted of the camp owners cramming as many tents in as possible, if people feel they're on top of each other I would imagine they'd be less likely to return in the future, I know it would put me off going back to a site like that.
