When did it become so difficult to go camping, especially on the spur of the moment? My husband and I did it 20 years ago and drove up one side of the country and down the other, stopping overnight at the first site we came to and paying in the morning before departing. Currently trying to get something for a few days for me,2 friends and our 2 kids between us. We were looking for sites with fires but that is way too restrictive. Would like woodland too - hah. All either booked, too far away or just stupidly difficult to get through the websites on booking procedures. For one, I typed in my details for 3 adult females (we're all over 40) and 2 10 yr old girls to be told "We don't allow single-sex parties". Cos of course we're just a riot when let loose on a campsite!!! Grrr

2 hours of searching through this website and New Forest specfic campsites and I've pretty much had enough of looking!

South. Prefer New Forest area and can't go any further across than East Sussex and that's pushing. Basic as possible as long as there are toilets. I've had a good look but am giving up really - left it rather late

Some of the New Forest sites are ok and fairly basic. One near Balmerlawn, Brockenhurst is quite big. Might be worth stressing group as single parents with children even if it means phoning rather than websites.

I've got a booking at the Wowo site in E.Sussex and am really looking forward to it. Sounds exactly like my kind of camping and came strongly recommended by the friend of a friend. Brilliant reviews here too so hopefully it's a keeper along with my lovely Rocks East Woodland near Bath - one day I'll stay there and it won't rain.....

Very badly organised this year as I've had so much going on. So far the only camping I've got in was cub camp a couple of weeks ago and I've got scout camp this coming weekend. Still good fun but not QUITE the same as relaxing by a campfire with a few beers and a select group.
