Just wondered if anyone here camps in Autumn/Winter and where you go/how you find it? Would love to try but obv with young kids we would need to be REALLY warm.. which I expect can be hard in a tent?!
Plus where is there to go off season? Pref not more than 2hr drive from Sheffield.

We camped at the end of October last year but the weather was horrendous , even for Britain . We ended up packing up and transferring to a static . Like you say , it was more our youngest , he was only 18 months old and we couldn't keep him warm in the f/c cos he always kicks the covers off and no way would he sleep in a sleeping bag .
Having said all that , there are plenty of peeps on here who camp all year round.

August 24th....Warren Farm
October 23rd....mmmm who knows ???
We camped at the end of October last year too.
It was beautiful clear sunny days and cold evenings.
The children were then 10 and 12.
We all wore thermals and had hot water bottles. The children had sleeping bags and quilts, we just had a thermal bottom sheet and a quilt. Walking socks for wearing at all times are best. A hot drink before bed time. No-one complained of being cold or was kept awake by the cold.
Deff need EHU for a fan heater which you can leave on most of the night on it's low or frost setting. You can take a gas heater but I wouldn't leave it on unattended.
The site had a 'club' house (because it had a golf course and statics but not the all singing and dancing type of club house iykwim) where we went each evening for a couple of hours. This helped to keep warm at night too.
Many have camped even later and Bridgywidgy even did Christmas in her tent - with full Christmas Dinner cooked by herself!! (if you do a search on past posts there are pictures)
As for a site - it's just a matter of finding something open all year that will take tents after a certain time as they like to give the pitches a chance to be rested and reseeded etc for the next year.

Think we will deffo try, prob local ones for 2 or 3 nights, we have a EHU and need to buy a fan heater as the neighbours old one broke when we were away- luckt it wasnt codl tho! x
We camped at the end of Sept last year and it was lovely, Indian Summer blah blah blah.
This year we are going on a Halloween weekend at the end of October half-term. As adults it's fine, but we do find we spend a lot more time inside the tent playing cards etc which for youngsters would be very boring.
Gas heater, quilt and lots of layers are definately needed.
BTW, Rivendale in The Peak District is open all year I think, has EHU, heated shower blocks and an on-site pub/restaurant, so would be good for tenters with kids at that time of year.
Ooh thank you, was thikning of the Sherwood Forest one, probably book that for 30/31 Oct (£16 per night, I rang other day but don't have funds just now!). But will keep that in mind as it's close, thanks!! :)
We camp every month! Last new year in -15 in Wales. That's definatley not for children. We did, however, camp in the heavy snow in the Lake District in Jan/February this year. Now that would be a wonderland for kids so long as you have the right kit to keep warm. The snow on the tent kept us very insulated so fine over night. Just the mornings that can take all your courage to get out of bed! If anyone's interested is this sort of camping, we've lots of hints and tips from learning the hard way!
Hey! Any tips welcome. I am back at uni in Sept and the other half works full time so if we do go camping then it's likely to be local and for 1 or 2 nights. Just wondered how the hell you set up a tent in the dark though? I have December off, would love a night or 2 then but thinking it would be pretty boring/cold???! Godknows- I know I won't be able to compare it to the glorious cornish sun we had last month, lovely light summer days etc, but I need to prepare for the worst- rain, snow etc and obviously no sitting outside the tent while the kid(s) play on the grass, would love to explore different places though now we have our camping gear!
We went to Shewrood Forest last Oct. It was brill for adults and kids alike! But...OMG!! It was soooooooo cold! We had been there the year before and it was lovely. Sunny and warm during the day and abit frosty at night. But last year, even with the heaters on, 2 in the awning and 2 in the van..it was bitter cold. We woke up one morning with frost on the inside! And that was with the heater lol
We even had to make a hotwater bottle for our 2 pet rats! This year we will take extra, extra warm blankets!
