Hi all, we're planning to go to Hoddom Castle in August for a week. Lots of positive reviews here, but nobody has ever mentioned midges. Does that mean they don't have midge problems in the area or everybody just failed to mention it? If they do have problems with midges, what tips can you give me? Any advice will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

We spent a very enjoyable weekend there in August last year and never saw or felt one midgie.  We might have been lucky but we never heard anyone complain and one family went there for two weeks every August.  Enjoy your stay! 17

Why do people think that the whole of Scotland is infested with midges?

avon 'skin so soft' not a repellent but a soother, great stuff should be able to get it from shop on site. having been eaten alive last year i know it's hard to ignore them, but the beautiful scenery should take your mind off the wee pests

Are you saying that midges are a problem at Hoddom Castle?  I didn't think they were.  17

we were there 3 years ago, and yes there were midges in abundance, wouldn't say they were a problem, more of a nuisance. due to their liking of being close to damp conditions you will probably find midges most places north of the border, given the vast amounts of lochs you have, found the same at the lake district, norfolk, and in some locations in yorkshire. but as i say like all pests, be it wasps, bees, flies, spiders or whatever they don't bother me at all, part of the luggage of camping innit?

Thanks everybody for your inputs. I will bear everything in mind. We are determined to have a good time anyway, midges or no midges.
