How hard is it to get a tent pitch in Cornwall mid-August by turning up on spec? Have booked site in Oxfordshire in early August and may want to extend holiday. Lots of places online look like they're booked solid. Any ideas? Fancy going to Marazion area.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
BOOK FOR GODS SAKE IF YOU WANT EHU. THIS YEAR CORNWALL WILL BE ABSOLUTELY STACKED!!! BELIEVE ME IT WILL! TRY CARLYON BAY CAMPSITE, BUT RING AND BOOK YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU DRIVE TO CORNWALL AND SPEND A FULL DAY LOOKING FOR A SITE AND END UP AT A DIVE
They're right you know, Cornwall is heaving ALREADY!!!
If you fancy Marazion, give Wheal Rodney a try. They have meadow specifically for tents with EHU (I think?). It's only a small site and maybe full already but worth a call if that's the area you want. Nice little site. Easy walk to the pub (Fire Engine Inn), St Michael's Mount and Penzance (along the seafront).
Good luck!

Cornwall is in the somewhat odd position of having been "saved" by the recession. After a second consecutive washout last year, and many tourists on phone-ins to Radio Cornwall swearing never to return (it was not just the weather, a number of high profile events were cancelled, for various reasons) the good old credit crunch has rescued the tourist industry, for at least another year at least that is.
Having said that there is enormous capacity and as long as your requirements are modest then there should not be a problem in turning up on spec, at least on the smaller sites. If you want all singing and all dancing then it may be worth trying to get a cancellation but why introduce yourself to the inner circles of hell when you do not have to
I was surprised how quiet Cornwall was last week - I appreciate that not all the schools had closed, but the site we were on was less than half full and we got parked at all of the beaches well into the day, whereas we had been warned to get there early...
Still, if you know you are going to extend I would book - and if you aren't sure then I would at least have a short list of campsites with vacancies before you go so that you can phone in advance to see if they still have the vacancy.
We're off to St Agnes (Beacon Cottage Farm) at the end of August, and my nephew and his wife wanted to come with their tent to stay a few days - there was a space for them for 2 nights only! :-(
Try Trewince nr Padstow http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1439. They have an overflow field which you can't book & which - I think - is better than the main area. There was loads of room when we went which was mid August 2007.
