Hiya everyone!!

Sorry to post this but I have spent a few hours looking at previous postings of working farms but just can't see any which suits my family.

I am from York and we are looking for a working farm around Yorkshire (60 mile radius) I will be using a tourer and also another family will be coming with there tent. We would like a working farm so the kids can get stuck in with any farm duties (and petting of course) The site must have a playground and shower facilities. And fingers crossed a pub close by. Any ideas anyone

The other party with the tent are from South Yorkshire so wanted to meet somewhere in the middle but not too bothered to be honest.

Many Thanks in advance
Simon and Kat

OOH elf n safety!! I fear this type of site is probably dieing(?) out.We used to stay at a farm near Aberdovey in Wales where we helped muck out, feed the calves from buckets, roll up the fleeces from sheep shearing, herding them up ready for dipping, etc. The farm itself was a massive playground too!

You may have more luck with a farm cl/cs site but are basic in facilities

Good luck in your search and welcome to UKCS

Have you tried 'Wolds View' near Malton? It is a farm and the owners let the children feed any baby animals ( although not sure if you can help with the farm activities) It has a small play area, beautiful views and a really nice bath/shower block. It is a site where you pitch where you want to and make your own entertainment really. We have been twice and enjoyed it...you will need rock pegs though as the ground is very hard.Might be worth a call to the owners to clarify if you can 'help' on the farm. The site is on the search engine. Hope this helps.

Speaking from experience, having been brought up on a dairy farm which my parents still run, I think that most working farmers probably have enough on their plates without having to entertain / supervise  visitors and children wanting to "help" 17. Especailly those who run a campsite from the farm as well!

Also a proper working farm isn't always the idylic place people imagine it to be; they can be pretty dangerous places and in this day and age I expect the threat of a law suit or two and health and safety requirements have put most ordinary farmers off opening up their farms to visitors who are maybe not fully aware of the hazards.

For these reasons I guess most campsites advertised as being on a "working farm" won't allow general access to the animals or let people get stuck in and help out.

This may change as DEFRA looks more and more to encourage farm visits and open days for the general public. So we may start to see more farms gearing up specifically to provide this sort of "farm stay" holiday.

At the moment though your best bet may be to settle for a farm visit, not quite the same as staying there I know!

This one in the Yorskhire Dales comes recommended and Swaledale is a lovely area. http://www.hazelbrow.co.uk/

Or there is one in Thirsk http://www.monkparkfarm.co.uk

I second Wolds Way,just got back, brilliant time, plenty of room for the kids with a play area, facilities are excellent and you can pretty much pitch where you like.

There`s lamb feeding at 6pm,kids loved it.

my cousins have a working farm in snowdonia,it's one of the oldest working farms in wales, and gets featured on television documentaries. They own a lot of land and mountain sides, and i have never thought before about asking if they would consider opening up a campsite of a field or two.
