I agree with Trav, Keswick is excellent.  The Camping & Caravanning Club have a lovely site on the side of Derwent Water and its an easy stroll into the centre of Keswick for its varity of shops, pubs and restaurants.  The only down side to the site is that it's prone to flooding - not too bad in a caravan, but you don't want to test your airbeds bouyancy in a tent!

Wouldn't bother in the lakes, dont know who u would pitch tent in a lake.  Best keep to dry land lol.  Seriously there are lots of great places to stay.  Try Hawkeshead, Keswick & around Kendal.  Just so many places all very good

-------------
It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.

Would recommend http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2241

High ground so good if the weather gets bad - however the name gives it away - 'cliffe'  they have some good flat areas but the majority of the site in on a hill overlooking Windermere.  Excellent facilities and very friendly staff. Had a great time there last summer.

Hi

Just got home from driving through the lakes today as I was visiting a friend who lives in Windermere.

Must say the Lake District is basking in Sunshine and looks fabulous in fact Thirlmere took my breath away it was so beautiful, the whole lake was so calm it was like one huge mirror.

Just drove through Keswick and at 9 tonight the place is buzzing with lots of people out enjoying the warm night.Would recommend Castlerigg Hall, great site,on high ground and overlooking Derwentwater and Keswick and is within walking distance of the town.

Thirlmere was where my hubby proposed to me! It's my favourite lake for that mirror-like quality you mention. We used to drive past it on a coach at silly o'clock in the morning to get to teaching practice when we were at uni in Ambleside. I think its technically a reservoir though. 2 settlements are submerged underneath.
