We have two tent setups for when we go camping (2 adults & 2 children), either:
1. a Montana 6 + canopy
or
2. 2 x Quechua 2 seconds 1's (which are tiny) and 1 x Quechua 2 seconds 2 - 1 each for the kids and 1 slightly larger for us.
The ground cover for the Montana is about 24m square.
The quechuas total about 7m square of ground cover.
However, when paying for the capsites, we get a bill for the main tent + 2 pup tents when we go with the Quequa's, making it a lot more expensive per night than the Montana, despite taking up much less room.
This appears to be a major drawback of using smaller tents, and doesn't make much sense.
Does anyone else have this issue, or are there smart ways around this?

Only my boys will share the 2man quencha as a pup tent, we have been told that this cannot be classed as a pup tent at all because it has 2 kids in and is a pitch on its own. crazy!!
It may seem unfair but imagine 3 other small tents all paying per pitch when there are several small tents on one pitch. Most sites allow one pup tent for free (although not all) and it has to be one rule for all. Why not get a Quechua base to go with the pop ups then it is all one tent and one fee.
Hope this doesnt come across cold as it isnt meant to. Am trying to look at it from a site owners point of view.
Would I pay for 2 pitches? No way. I would get the base :)

I expect that if they are not in the same party, then they wouldn't want to be on the same pitch? (unless I misunderstand)
In France, all the campsites we have been to charge for a pitch (and number of people), not per tent. You can then have several small tents, or 1 large tent, as long as you stay within the pitch boundary - this seams more sensible to me!
we had similar problem last yr, if we took our 6 man tent it was one price, but if we took the pop ups, it worked out more expnesive than the biger tent, even tho in the six man price we could've had six in the pop up only four. So i mentioned it to the site, and they agreed to let us pay the same price as the bigger tent.

Campers do it in the mud!
Hubby says we can't camp as much this yr mmm we'll see!!
camped in 2009= 27nights
Booked for 2010 = 30 nights.
Yes this is where the French have the pitch fees set in a more sensible way. If the kids want to sleep in a pup tent next to the main tent it should make no difference to the pitch charge.
My daughter wants to use a pup tent but its only worth doing in France as most sites here will charge extra.

Never had this problem on a CC site.... caravan full awning and pup tent with two or even three kids in...... maybe you should try the C & CC they are probably similar to the CC.
Can see the argument from both sides, but I think that if you've paid for a pitch you should be able to put want you want on it as long as you stay within your 'boundarys' and only use one lot of electric. We have a caravan, car, awning, windbreaks and pup tent on our pitch when we go away and noone has ever said anything to us about it.

Did you ask them why and point out that its not logical? Just interested to hear how they justified it.
I think it's unfair. Two teeny popup tents charged more than a huge 8 man tent?!?
We were even told by some sites that if we bought a base seconds and attached the popups to that we'd be charged for 3 tents!! In the end we bought a 4.2 popup which does us fine.
