Stayed at Hayfield too, it's actually a Camping & Caravanning Club site, but I think they allow non-members. Although, as a non-member you pay extra, so it may be worth joining (about £38 per year) if you are planning to go a few times. Walking around there is marvellous, have tramped many a mile around there.
Another site in that area is Losehill, that is a Caravan Club site, not sure if that accepts non-members, but the same applies, if you go a few times, it would be cheaper to join. Walked absolutely miles all around there too, one to Ladybower reservoir, also Mam Tor is near there, walked to Edale from there (start of the Pennine Way) to name a few.
It's within walking distance of Castleton, which has quite a few pubs.
A bit further north, in Yorkshire, is Hawes. Another Caravan Club site, in a marvellous position. We once stayed there for 8 nights, when we had a car + caravan. The car never moved from the day we arrived until the day we left. All we did was walk miles each day, I don't think there is a hill around there we haven't been on. From Hawes to Thwaite via Buttertubs pass, and back via the Pennine Way over Great Shunner fell is a walk we've done 3 times now. And each time, when we've got to Great Shunner Fell, the cloudbase has been very low, so never had a view from there, which we are led to believe is great. Maybe one day we'll see it!! Also, Hawes is within walking distance with quite a few pubs. We've stayed on that site twice over Xmas, it was great.
