Can anyone tell me why camping has got so expensive over the last few years? With more and more sites charging pitch prices and then extra for each child, and whats worse extra for dogs, whats all that about how does a dog cost extra??? how is it so expensive for children.

Its getting easier to spend a LITTLE extra for holidays abroad.

I've noticed that the old pricing for either a small or a large tent seems to have gone - just seem to pay for the people ? Surely we used to pay less for a small tent - less pitch space so more room for everyone else and less grass damaged?

I think it has something to do with the sizes that tents are getting these days. Some of them are bigger than 2 hotel rooms put together.

It's like anything else, there are cheap ones and expensive ones and sometimes the prices do not reflect the facilities on offer. It's kind of self regulating - if it is too expensive, nobody will stay. If sites are expensive and full, well draw your own conclusions.

We used to have a cat, who now sadly is no longer with us, but we took him with us in the van. He never went out, only if we sat outside, he sometimes sat on our laps, but he never went wandering about. We had a litter tray for him in the bathroom. Yet some sites even charge for cats, I've seen it on their price lists! How bizarre is that?
To an extent I can understand the charge for a dog, as there are inevitably owners who don't clean up after them, a case of the minority spoiling it for the majority, and sometimes sites have dog bins which need emptying etc, so I can see that there is some work involved.

agree with rowan about the dogs.responsible dog owners clean up after their dogs and cost nothing to go on a site.the other day i booked a special offer on a site 149 pounds for 1 month.dogs were 180 pounds.when i contacted the site i enquired about a reduced rate for dogs.i paid there and then and got dogs for free

I wouldn't say that the above is quite true.  Many people will be put off staying on a site with dogs so they will lose some custom by allowing them.

frankie dogs are allowed on the majority of sites you just have to pay over the top  on some of them.we take our two,pay for them, clean up after them and above all abide by whatever rules the sites have for dogs .

dont mind paying and we do but some charge £3 per night which is way over the odds

I agree.  Like you, I have two dogs but I've seen sites that charge up to £3 per dog per night, which really bumps up the price.

Overhearing a couple walking their dog late one evening past our van i heard the bloke say to his missus that the dog had done his '3 pounder'.I chuckled to myself because i knew what he meant because we had just booked in with our dog...until i got up in the morning and it was about two feet from our door! They had'nt even cleaned it up.I suppose their view was 'we've paid for it so leave it there'.By the look of it,it looked about 3lbs in weight too,the dirty pigs.

Doesn't matter how much you charge for a dog...doesn't change the fact that if they are lazy and dirty owners they will leave their poo all over the shop.  Its just another way to make money, why should responsible dog owners be penalised for those who think they are above the rules.  Shame you can't charge people for lack of respect cos on some days you'd make a fortune lol

hi all

I really don't understand the wide variances in pricing.........

ok, if the site has lots of facilities, then i expect to pay more, but there are some things which just don't make sense

why would i want to pay more for a site with a bar and clubhouse, i wouldnt even think about using it, so off the list they go

some sites charge more because they have more toilets and showers, ermmm dont think i will want to use them any more than normal, so there off the list too

i've even come across sites that charge you more because that have environmentally friendly facilities, like under ground source floor heating in the facility block, ....free heat, why i am i being asked to pay more! off the list too

in most cases, your'e dog shares your tent space, why charge for them, even providing a seperate dog walking area isnt exactly a big expense .....so if you're kids get nits and bring them are you going to pay more, lol, (hopefully not)

pitch and tent size , i do understand, you are using a little more grass!

but on some sites its per person, so can i bring my very very big tent and just put 2 of us in it for the same price? errr, no we expect two people to be in a two person tent!

and then there's the whole ehu issues, same cost per night no matter how much or how little you use, doh, i must be missing something here

surely, the answer is by basic size of pitch, and then by person and extras that take up lots of space (windbreaker acres and six pup tents in a row, lol)

our fave site charges per person, with no fixed pitch size, lots of room, no extra charges but its a working farm and has only got two toilets, but thats the type of camping we like

but i suppose having a variety of sites, facilities and charges is all there to attract the widest camping fraternity as possible...........including those who cant clean up after their dogs, (hopefully far and few between.)

so now i am on a mission to a few sites that are quiet, with few facilities and a fair charging policy.....

Sharon
i will get the medication soon......

What I feel is taking the pish is making people pay for the whole bank holiday even if they only want to stay one night.

This is from a campsite that wasnt even a quarter full!

One campsite in Abersoch wants 4nights dosh for the august bank hol!!! 17
