Section 269 of the Public Health Act 1936 allows local authorities to issues licences to campsites with tents. The LA can then attach conditions, usually one of these conditions may cite separation distances. It varies from LA to LA whether these licences are granted/enforced and there are several exemptions for clubs (ie caravan club), rallies, fields used for short periods etc etc.
So in answer to your question there is a legal aspect but it will vary dramatically from area to area and site to site so there is no 'norm'. Sites may also have their own rules and regs which they are at liberty to enforce.
The 6 metre separation distance comes from the model conditions attached to most caravan site licences (not tents), but can be used as good practice.
