As a regular visitor to Shell Island, I have to say that although we know that bad behaviour goes on, we have been quite lucky I suppose in that we've always managed to avoid it. In fact I would say that the usual 80/20 rule applies here as much as anywhere else - you only see the 20% that are behaving badly you never see the 80% who are quietly going about their own business and having a fab holiday. We don't use the bar/arcades or the cafe apart from the occasional carton of chips - the other shops are fine - the kids only use the playground if they're waiting for us at the shops. As has previously been said, time the showers right and they are no worse than many others I've used on campsites and better than some!
If you can get a good spot, it's a fabulous place - you can stay there for a week and not have to go off the island - the kids never get bored as there's so much for them to do, it's right on the beach, they can spend hours crabbing on the causeway or the harbour, they can fish, they can explore the sand dunes - we spend hours up there playing manhunt - we walk for miles and never leave the place, proper fires on the beach toasting marshmallows watching the sun go down and Dads doing a bit of beachcasting. Bliss.
If you went now (September) you wouldn't recognise the place from these descriptions - you'd probably have 3 fields to yourself or you might even get a spot right on the beach. Perfect.
I would go to Shell Island every time I went camping if I could - there's only two things that put me off, the first is the wind, which we have been caught in many times and managed to survive and the second is the toilets. I'll just have to get a bucket.
Can you tell I'm a fan?
