I hear there are certain pitches on this site which are better than others. We are thinking of going next Aug and keen to book a.s.a.p. can anyone recommend a particular part of the park to try and book?
thanks

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
A friend of mine stayed there and she said that it was lovely. The only thing to be careful of is that apparently you camp on shingle so take something to put under your tent as the shingle started to pierce her groundsheet.
We go there every year and like Marmite you either love or or hate it.
The serviced pitches are in 3 fields - Northfield, Orchard and Four acres. I have stayed in all 3 and my personal preference is Orchard. My O/H likes Northfield because there is more going on.
Do you have children? or want to be near the centre? Some fields don't allow dogs.
If you go onto their site you can look at the pitch map and see what your priorities are and choose from there. If you decide to go have a walk round and you can book the pitch you want for next time.
All serviced pitches are gravel. You will need rock pegs which can be purchased in the shop or hired. You will also need a hammer or metal mallet to bang them in and a puller to get them out. The good thing is if it rains the pitches are well drained. You can hire carpet to go under your SIG.
During August for 4 weeks only they open the Cornfield and Chamberlain field. These do not have hook up and have portaloos/showers but you can still walk to the main blocks if you choose. Chamberlaine field is a 1/4 mile up the road from the main site along a main road. You cannot use the swimming pool complex if you stay in Chamberlaine field but this year the had 2 large round above ground pools but you had to pay extra to use them.
It does get booked up very quickly, so if you do decide to go don't leave it too late to book.
Four Acres does have quite a few pitches which are much bigger than others. We had a huge pitch in Four Acres when we stayed in May 08. But it was facing/near the washblock on the corner and people kept cutting through and across our pitch as a short cut. If you have a dog the dog field is off of this field.
We prefer Orchard as it's quieter and the pitches are still a good size.

I looked at this site for our summer holiday this year. It looks like a brilliant place but sorry, as far as I'm concerned camping should be done on grass!
I personally wouldn't be happy pitching on shingle, mat or no mat.
Surely there has got to be better alternatives as regards hardstandings/all weather pitches for tents.

I personally believe that originally the gravel pitches were intended for caravans/RV's. Campers in those days did not use EHU so it was not a problem. Several years ago they used to have woodland camping with no EHU but this area was converted to lodges.
We do not have a SIG but camping on gravel for us is not a problem. We take a very large tarpaulin that we cover with M&S picnic blankets that we use as carpets.
As has been mentioned before seasonal camping on grass is available throughout August for 4 weeks only as they cannot get council permission to open any longer.
