The Star is closest and about 15 minutes drive away from a town, with a good supermarket. As a site it is OK, if all you want is a base to visit Alton Towers, it is kept clean and tidy.

If you decide to go there, would strongly recommend that you read everything that is printed on their website, especially the booking conditions as there may be no way of changing anything once you  have made a definite booking.

Take it from someone who has been there quite a few times, but after the "encounter" I had with a male person on the telephone (wouldnt say gentleman, as that was not the case) will never be back.

there is glencote in chedleton near leek not to far away a bit pricey but cracking site probs about 20 30 min drive

I havent been on that Star site for many years after a bad experiance whilst tent camping there of having our tent pegs pulled out at night by a peeping Tom, but my daughters Friend stayed there for a weekend last year. Indeed I wouldnt rank it as one of the better ones in the area, Its quite uneven ground in places and prone to large groups of noisey youths camping in a field nearby who ran riot after dark, maybe thats why the owner was so grumpy lol!

Try the Gateway site at Ashbourne, Caravan and Camping Club brand new site at Hulland ( Maybe listed as Ashbourne), Stydd farm near Carsington Water visitors centre, The Knockerdown Inn site, or the real jewel in the crown, Chatsworth House CC site which may take non members Caravans, Motorhomes and Trailer tents for a small extra charge.

All are within easy reach and less than an hours drive of Alton towers.

Finally dont forget to take your Picnic and Drinks, once inside A-T their catering prices are VERY expensive, although there are quite a few good pubs serving good food at fair prices in the nearby town and village centres. 

There are also supermarkets nearby with Sainsburys and Sommerfield  at Ashbourne, and Tesco and Lidl at Uttoxeter.

Star closest , but its like a pow camp , my kids got told off for playing in the park!!!!!

at 10 pm , i was sat alone outside my tent with the bbq coal keeping me warm and security made me put it out with a bucket of water he kindly brought
