Hi All,

Hubby & I are looking at getting away for a few days in April & I've read through the reviews & selected three sites which all have pitches available.

It will be the first time we have taken our new Adria Altea 542UK any distance so this will be the big 'motorway' test!  One thing I am a bit nervous about is the entrance to the campsite.  We have an electronic handbrake in the car (previous owners modification) which is a pain in the backside when towing so would prefer a site with a straightforward entrance & no big hills!

As its only us at the moment, we would prefer a quieter site, right next to a lovely beach.  We have good facilities in the van but I'd still like the option of going for a shower so the campsite facilities need to be clean.  Not bothered about a shop, pub etc as we will have the car for day trips.

So the three campsites I've selected are:

1) Queensberry Bay

2) Mossyard

3) Sandyhills (part of Gillespie Leisure).

At the present moment I'd love to book the Queensberry Bay site however I'm waiting to hear back from them as the length of the Adria may restrict us from having a seaview pitch.  My next choice, based on reviews is Mossyard but would appreciate any opinions from anyone that lives in the area or knows of the sites.

Many thanks

Kirsty

Hi Kirsty

All 3 sites are ok for getting in and out i would pick sandyhills and queensberry view before mossyard if im correct its inbetween beeswing and kirgunzeon just outside dfs.

Sandyhills is a lovely place havent stayed at the sire but had a few walks through it there is a lovelt beach and about a mile walk you have barrhead holiday village (try google) it has a pub and resturant you also have a golf course within a mile if you golf and plenty of lovely walks. You could visit rockcliffe and kippford both very nice seeside villages kippford haveing 2 pubs that do lovely food. Kippford also has a very nice campsite.

If picking sandyhills when you come along the A75 at the 6th roundabout on the Dumfries bypass you will see the sign post for solway coast follow that towards Dallbeatie about 2 mile further but good wide road all the way other road will be sign posted new abbey and southerness but a bit tighter and hiller dallbeatie way has on long hill at start and fairly flat after that.

Queensberry bay very easy access you will see the sign post off the A75 about 3 miles past annan really flat no hills.

We have stayed here many times even though we just stay in Dumfries 13miles away. When my daughter was younger (now 12 going on 30 ) her and my wife would go down there for the weekend if i was working you can walk for miles along the beach when tides out site is very well kept (havent been for about 18mth) ladies toilets had just been renewed and gents had sign to say they would be getting done soon my wife said ladies where spotless i didnt check. As you go through powfoot there is a narrow bridge but easy to see over you then pass the hotel and go along a narrow road (plenty of room) for about !/4m to site. Hotel does lovely food and outside it on a sunday sometimes they have horse riding on the beaches if your into that.I would try for a sea view i dont think their that strick if your just over. It also has a new log cabin with swimming pool and hot tub you can hire for private use if hubby wants a romantic night lol. If your into cycling take your bikes as a national cycle route goes right through site and as its next to sea cycle route is flat and goes into Annan and Dumfries, You could also look at hoddam not far from here.

Mossyard if its the one im thinking of i wouldnt want to stay there looks ok but nothing on site and right next to main road if you pick sandy hlls you will pass it and say im glad we listened to gerry lol .

Sorry to have went on a bit but if you do decide to come to d&g  feel free to ask anything

Gerry

I'm  sitting down on a shoreside pitch at this very minute at  Queensberry bay. In my opinion I would have to say QB is the best of the sites you have listed.  I guess it all depends on the length of your van.

Might be best to give them a phone to clarify the max length.  Hope your van is of a length that is acceptable as its a lovely quiet site.

I'm loving it as usual, pity I didn't bring my binoculars though

On the plus side for QB, there is a brilliant Spa  on site for private hire which just tops off your holiday, it just makes you feel a bit special

Hi Gerry & Tiggarsmum,

Thanks both for the replies, especially Gerry for the detailed info re access to site as although I probably won't be towing as Hubby likes to, I do still worry on his behalf lol!

As we are coming for a long weekend we've decided to plum or QB in the first instance... the Spa has nothing to do with it whatsoever.... she says!!  The lady from the site called me & asked about the length of the van so I've emailed back to advise its 7.1 metres.  I'm hoping that won't cause a problem but I suspect it will... *sigh*... everything about the site just looks ace & access to the hot tub is just fab as Hubby is pining to go back to Piperdam in Dundee as last year we had a log cabin with private hot tub & it was amazing.  Still we've got the van now so QB is the best of both worlds.

Hoping to hear back from the nice lady at the QB site tomorrow & if its a yeah then we are definately booking!

Fingers crossed for us
