OK, so you're sitting on the electric fence...  Good luck with that!

I have one, possibly silly question:  Is it not possible to limit the current draw at the local connection point by installing an appropriately rated breaker?

If a site advertises a 5A hookup (for example - I have no idea if that's reasonable or not), surely the site should ensure their supply can cope with the cumulative maximum demand without tripping?

It is entirely possible I am missing something!

Very few site's main supply would be able to cope if every EHU was used to capacity. There have been a few sites we've been to that have asked us to be very careful as to how much electricity we use as the site as a whole was close to its limit. It was explained that to increase the overall supply would cost about £50,000 as a complete new 11kV line and transformer would have to be installed.

The unit cost of electricity is currently about 10p so a 2kW heater would cost 20p per hour to run.

our caravan although a 4 berth is relatively small and once warm (usually by using the gas) the temp can be maintained on the 500w setting. This is controlled by a thermostat that can be heard switching on and off during the evening. We have only left this running throughout the night when it was below freezing outside.

I'm pretty sure it would take less electricty to heat a caravn than a tent.  The caravan has insulation, designed to keep the heat in, as opposed to the constant loss through the sides of the tent.

That is a very low.  Most are about 10 amp and the maximum I have been on are 16 amp.. The key thing is to stop the electric tripping is to monitor the amperage of your electrical items.  If you have lots of items on and exceed the sites  limit then the whole site or at least a secion of the site will be minus leckii  So inother words one pitch that overloads knocls out the majority of the others.

The price of forrest fields is ok and they have a good site really do but if we all are careful with not overloading the system i can see no problem do tenters get a discount then for not having a good supply .I would invest in wind turbines to do the electricity on a seperate relay system from the caravans so not all would have a problem. The system is not up to standards i have in mind if it is always tripping!

Hi

If you do not want ehu at fforest fields you pay less, as for the site first class and if that is their site rules campers and caravanners take their own choice if they stay there or not.

I just wonder with all these terrible sites out there why people want to pick pieces out of a well run site, the mind boggles.

cheers

steve

Was just thinking that surely it would be your own electric supply that would trip as it would trip out on your own RDC hook up and not trip the whole site.

anyway ...... it still wouldn't put me off going as I hear nothing but good reports about the site and the area.

had another thought - maybe in the pricing it could say
tent xxx per night
ehu xxx per night
estra adult xx
extra child xx
dogs xx
day tent xx
electric tent heater £1 a night extra

I would pay it if the site were like Jakers (Brynawelon) or FF or one of th eother good sites out there.
I still think site owners should charge less in warmer months and more in colder.

I probably shouldn't be posting on this thread as I am a caravanner, but we used to be tenters and our boys still often use a tent alongside our caravan.

With the right camping equipment it should not be necessary to leave an electric heater on all night in a tent - yes put it on for an hour or two before getting ready for bed and put it in a position where you can put it on before getting out of your sleeping bag in the morning but to leave it on all night is pointless - you might as well leave it on outside for all the good it will do. Even if it has a thermostat it will be on constantly as so will be wasting loads of electricity.

Maybe one way round the problem would be for sites to allow all units including tents to have EHU all year round but to cut off the supply between midnight and 6am unless their was a genuine medical reason for needing the EHU.

I can assure you that I don't leave the heater on all night (thermostaically contolled or not)

We only use it if it gets too cold - which considering at home we have no central heating and only coal fires downstairs - we are well used to it. We take hotvwater bottles to help with the cold.

dadsbeaniemad - I was not saying that you leave your heating on all night long but there are quite a lot of people who do which is I think is what Fforest Fields are trying to avoid.

It's Ok I know you weren't - just a general statement

At the end of the day it's their site and their rules.
Sounds like they limit the number of tents rather than ban them. Maybe it should say please phone if you wish to camp with a tent before xxxxxx

one of the reasons people have ehu is to extend their camping season.  Amongst other reasons.  I am starting to get a little loss, put me on the right track, while trying to work out.  Is the reason against ehu:

Is it because people have too many electrical items on at the same time, thus tripping the switch?

Having a fan heater per se? or having a fan heater on while not in the tent for hours on end and open to abuse.

If it's a fan heater per se, for me thats one of reason why have ehu, as I feel it's safer, but do have a gas heater. which I use, in  the same way as fan heater. but with an electrical heater it can be used safetly in the bedroom pod.  Which I can't with gas. because the gas heater is in the main living area,

to switch it on, have to insert a gas cannister. which is taken out when not in use for safety reasons.

Or can have electric fan heater, just dont abuse it,   well what I mean don,t have it on 24 hrs a day

Exactly, plenty of sites to choose from, if you don't like it, stay somewhere else, 'simples' as that furry advert star would say. We really don't need two threads dedicated to slating Fforest Fields.
