We were at Bunree at the end of July last summer.  It was damp and warm, but I cannot say that we were really bothered by them that much.

The only campsites I have really been bothered by Midges are Glencoe and Oban CCC, probably because the first is sheltered by the mountains and the second because it sits inside a walled garden.

Bunree and sites like that, that are on the coast, will get sea breezes and these will keep Midges at bay.

Neither Midges nor Mosquitos bother Mrs Lobey at all, but both bring me out in 50p sized lumps.
But neither would stop me holidaying in either Scotland nor Spain and they should not stop you either.

But do yourself a favour and if you are going to holiday in either of these countries, take a repellent that is apropriate for the job. IE Midge repellent for Midges and Mosquito Repellent for Mosquitos.

>>>the little toerags seemed attracted to the orange ovies<<<

Och weel noo, if Bog Myrtle has been keeping the little blighters away from Hairy Heelanders in Tartan Skirts for centuries, I'm sure its descendant will keep them away from Macho Men in Orange Romper Suits.

Hi.

I am new and realise this is quite an old thread but would appreciate any advice.

Despite considering it several times we have never visited the Highlands before but decided this year we would give it a go.One of the reasons we have avoided it is the reputation of the midges. We have found what looks a great site at Glencoe (invercoe) but after reading this thread are having second thoughts!!

The site has "midge machines" i think they are called. Will these make any difference?

We have a 3 year old  and are concerned that although we maybe able to put up with the midges it would be unfair on her to be eaten alive!

Due to work commitments we planned to travel in June which seems to be one of the worst months and although we could visit end of May early June as we are in a tent it may be a bit cold any earlier.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

If the midges were anything like as bad as their reputation then nobody would ever come to Scotland.

Hi, I have relatives in the east coast & friends in the west and highlnds & the midges really can be found in all parts. I do think some people react worse than others. Your little girl might not find them as bad as you do ! They can be very nasty though - they always seem to bite my eyelids, can't bear it, I always wear the nets and find not much else works.
