We're thinking of buying a sun canopy for our tent, but have noticed that a lot of campsites charge extra for an 'awning'. So as per subject, is a canopy classed as an awning?

Depends where you go. Some charge it as an awning. Some ignore it if it is taken down at night.

We have been using a Khyam sun Porch on the side of our tent (obvious as it's a different colour) for the last couple of years.

No site has ever mentioned it, or suggested that we be charged for it.

No never happened to us and we've stayed at some strict sites too.  Even our Monty extension never gave anyone any concern - a sun canopy isn't really giving you extra living area as its just providing some shelter in front of your tent.  Ive found its the width your tent takes up causes most concern rather than length.
