Hi there,

We are trying to plan our first camping trip of the year for the first weekend of May half term. We usually go for sites where there is no set pitch and loads of space for boys (6 & 4) to play around. Preferably with no/ few caravans around.

To complicate things this year my OH has just bought a kayak (why? who knows) and so he wants somewhere he can just pop it in the water nearby and have a paddle. Whether I let him take the kids is another matter!

We are J9 of M25 and dont really want more than hour and a half away.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated!
Thankss

Not an hour away but for a first attempt with the kids then Sleningford Water Mill

They also do one day tri it and handling courses go2h2o.co.uk

also near to Lightwater Valley so if you decide against the kids going in the Kayak then they can have a day out.

Not sure how far away from you but this campsite at Lechlade is a cheap, open site, just a field away from the Thames. Easy access to the Thames for kayaks/inflatables etc; and the river is fairly quiet being at the start of navigation. Not sure if kayaking on the Thames requires a licence though.

Update...you do need a licence from the Environment Agency. You can obtain these directly from locks along the Thames at a reduced rate for short periods. Full details here

Not an hour's drive, but we stayed at this site last year:

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1924

We thought it was lovely. The river Wye runs alongside the park and you can float your own boat or hire a canoe from the site. The bottom field has unmarked pitches for tents and there are often campers there who canoe from site to site. The tents are arranged around the outside of the field with plenty of play area in the middle for kids (and dads too usually)

Thanks. There are ones to remember but bit too far for our weekend. The new inflatable kayak has just arrived and we realise there is no way it will fit in the car with tent etc anyway so that will have to be a seperate expedition!

Hi, we've just come back from Waveney River Centre in Suffolk, where my hubby took his new kayak for its first time use (mid life crisis I think)... Its right on the broads and perfect for a little paddle about.. the camp site is superb, lovely adventure playground and swimming pool and all private shower/wet room/toilets...

Have a look at their web site http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=3576

Ps.. its worth taking a camcorder, very nearly got my £250 moment,  but he refused to fall in at the last moment.. :-)

What inflatable kayak was it? I've been thinking of getting one for a while, but can't decide on which one.

After researching them for 2 years (!) he settled on a Stearns Inflatable Kayak IK140.

Weve just found Hurley Riverside Park near Maidenhead which sounds ideal.

I walked past there today doing a stretch of the Thames Path. It seems like a nice peaceful part of the river Think I'll take the kids there this summer, despite being very close to home LOL
