Might be a bit too far for you, but Gallows Hill seems to fit the bill. It's remote (though only two miles from Barnard Castle), very basic but very cheap. Mark the owner is great - there are no "rules", he takes large groups and camp fires are allowed too. I think it gets quite busy over bank holidays but was very quiet when we went last weekend for my birthday (though there was a fairly large group in the other field who stayed up late chatting and playing guitars - didn't bother us at all though). We came back very chilled and will be going again but with more of us next time!
