Hi
We want to embark on our first camping trip with our 3 kids who are 5 and 3. We've been invited along with another family who have camped previously and seem to have all the gear including season 4 sleeping bags, I think ours are Season 2 or 3. My friend says it will be cold but you are fine as long as well wrapped up. I think if it was just me and the OH I would be fine but I don't want the kids to be cold and put us off camping on our first ever camping trip! My friends kids are 7,5 & 2 so I am sure she wouldn't take them if she thought it too cold. What do you all think from your experience, is it good waking up with frost on your tent we are thinking of going to the Scottish Borders?
Thanks as always!

Should be no bother as long as you are prepared for all eventualities i.e layers to put on/take off, snug sleeping bags etc.  A tip, get the children into their pj's an hour or so before going to bed - get ready in the site loos and put clothes on over them.  Then it's just a case of them taking off rather than putting on before going to bed so will be warmer for them.  A hot chocolate (or toddy for the adults).  In the morning put the heater (if you have one) to take chill away before getting dressed etc.Enjoy!

As said above plenty of layers, better with 2 or 3 layers that can come off as one thick one.  My kids are 6 & 4 and they have outwell kids bags, I use the dunelm fleecy underblanket on top of the airbed/campbed, picnic rug underneath. They wear a t shirt and long pj's and a thin zipper top over the t shirt,BHS do good sets of 3 like this or Primark do fleecy ones. They have thick socks (I use the slipper socks) and lastly a blanket for over the top but not normally needed. A good idea is to heat the bed up with a hot water bottle before they get in they can cuddle it as well if they are feeling a bit chilly and a hot drink before bed is a good one too.

Not sure if its an option for you but mine anyway like to have their own stuff, eg they have the outwell kids bags and their own blanket, bed 10 for the boys and peppa for the girl! I find that it makes it more exciting for them and helps to make them more settled!

I tend to find that they sleep really well and it's more me being paranoid than anything else!

If you have EHU its worth getting a fan heater just for a quick blast before bedtime as well.

In my experience, I always feel the cold more than my kids, and none of my worries about them feeling too cold have ever amounted to anything. When we camped over the early may BH last year (Dorset not Scotland!) it was very chilly at night but both the kids slept like logs and turfed their lovingly prepared hot water bottles out of their sleeping bags! As the others have said, lots of layers which can be adjusted as necessary. No ehu used btw.

Enjoy!

Sandra

Thinking of giving it a go this weekend, peak district maybe. Day temps seem ok, but dropping down to near freezing point overnight. Will post next week and give info.

My 10 year old and I have just got back today from 4 days in Shropshire without EHU. It was cold at night, 0 degree's, but so long as you have really good bedding arrangements it's fantastic, and the campsites are lovely and quiet.

I was most cold between after our evening meal and bedtime, so if you are worried about this you can always go to the local pub for a slow evening meal, and then come back and get straight in too bed!

Enjoy

Personally i would find it a little cold at the moment in the evenings. We have 3 young kids and although they never complained of being cold in the tent. I used to find it chilly once the sun had gone down even in the summer months if it wasn't good weather. Once we were in bed it was fine but its that bit between tea and bedtime that you may find a bit chilly and the dressing/undressing bits!!! However we never took a heater like some people do and our equipment was not the best.
