Longleat locals, can you answer a question please? One morning over the Easter break we heard a siren. It was loud and sounded like the archetypal WW2 air raid siren, or at least, how they sound in the movies 'cos I wasn't there! Does anyone know what this was for please?

I think we heard it a few yrs ago when staying at Longlete, I think it is Longlete testing their alrm system? I hvae a vague memory that they test weekly.
Thanks for the replies. I wondered about quarrying but didn't hear the subsequent explosion that I thought would follow. Could be the Longleat alarm system I suppose. It was very eerie to hear a sound so iconic of the blitz.

I've never been to the Longleat site but is it near a railway? I grew up in an old Station master's house and we often hear the old air raid siren when they were working on the lines warning workers of an oncoming train.
It could also be due to the Royal Signals regiment being out on manouvers in the area. There are a lot of military camps on and around Salisbury plain, Frome and Warminster, sometimes live fire is used for target practice, and the sirens warn others of the fact before firing commences on the ranges.

the quarries around here dont normally run on the bank hoildays so i would expect they were testing them as its the only time they get due to restricitons on times for blasting during the normal day.
You certainly wouldn't here the quarries over at Longleat. I live much closer and I don't here them. It may be something to do with the Army not far away.
There is no railway near Longleat so it cannot be that.
The only lion to have escaped in the past was a sea lion which swam off down river.
Favourite must be the fire alarm testing.

well you can hear them in frome, in a quiet site you can hear things along way off, and if the winds going the right way you can hear the lions roar, must just be in the peasful places you can hear things.
I live in Warminster, the siren is sounded at 8am on Friday morning, as you may be aware Warminster is a garrison town, right on the edge of Salisbury plain and the air raid siren is something that is tested out every week :)
