Hi I have some free time and would love to camp around SW or E England or S Wales but many sites now charge on a per pitch basis which makes it prohibitively expensive for just me. Can anyone recommend any sites that are reasonable and charge per person? No EHU needed, but a shower would be nice at some places.

You could join one of the clubs, they charge per person but also a pitch fee. I always have electricity but still only pay about £9.50 a night.

You'd also get the use of the CLs and CS sites which you can find pretty cheaply and a lot of them don't have any facilities anyway.

Might be worth the £35 (give or take) joining fee.

I think the majority of sites charge a basic price covering 2 persons, unit (caravan or tent) and a car. I mostly camp alone and usually have to pay that basic fee.

However, many sites will give a concession for single occupancy (if you speak nicely to them) which is always welcome.

Many sites which charge per person often charge a pitch fee seperately. It makes it look like a solo camper is getting a bargain whereas the truth is that a couple or a family are having to pay a huge amount of money.

One site I went to near The Witterings in West Sussex a couple of years ago advertised per person charges on their website but when I got there they insisted there was a minimum charge for two persons. Had I not been towing a caravan at that time and didn't want to have to drive around narrow lanes looking for another site I wouldn't have stayed. The owner did knock a little bit off when I complained.

One place I like which charges per person is Bridge House Campsite at Lechlade in Gloucestershire. I think it was only £7 last year. Don't know how much with EHU.

If you're taking a small tent then it's always worth asking if there are any half or odd sized pitches that you can have at a reduced price, if they normally charge unit + 2 prices for a standard sized pitch that can take a family tent.

Thanks for all the feedback so far, please keep it coming.

Nora - I had a look at a CCC site I liked and it said for mid season Adult £5.90, non member pitch per night £7. Does that mean I can stay as a non-member for £7 (hurrah!) or would I have to pay £13.90?

You would have to pay £12.90, but if you are going to go more than 5 days per year it would pay to join then there would be no non members fee

If you go for 5 nights as a non-member it will cost you 5 x £12.90 = £64.50

If you join the club and go for 5 nights it will cost you 5 x £5.90 = £29.50 plus the joining fee of £37.00 minimum = £66.50

...and if you don't agree to set up a direct debit with the club it will cost another tenner £76.50

It's cheaper not to join the club

After extensive calculation, I reckon that, ignoring the direct debit option, 7 nights savings would more than cover the membership fee.

I agree. Plus, as I said before, you have the option of the Cls or CSs, depending on which club you join. I think the C&CC might be slightly cheaper per person on club sites but I'm not sure and can't get on to the web site at the moment.

Us?!! We are more Mid West Wales than south but don't penilise for solo campers, one person in a tent would be charged £ 5 per night, ALL SEASON and dependant upon time of year ( due to popularity) that would be on an AWP, so no soggy SIG.

We have thought long and hard on pricing structure and found this seasons way to be working out best, one price all season so no complicated tariff, a combination of per person and per pitch charging depending on pitch type, no one gets penilised and we cover costs of operating the park, I'm pleased to say.
