I am desperately trying to sort out a week in Scotland in the middle of August - my 2 weeks hols have had to be split so I am trying to see that as a good thing and get 2 very different camping hols in
My problem is I wanted to be near enough to Edinburgh that we could see the sights there, but it's the same time as the Edinburgh Festival so I'm losing hope!
So, any recommendations for a nice quietish site for a mum and child to camp, possibly travelling distance to Edinburgh, or close to a beach / loch? I don't want a site with clubhouses and the like, but a playground and little shop is good.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
THE SITE for Edinburgh is Linwater at East Calder. Easy bus link to the City from near site or there's a park & ride a couple of miles away. Pubs / shopping in East Calder - about 1 1/2 miles. Top class, no frills but very friendly site with good walking nearby - gets rave reviews.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
How far would you travel to Edinburgh? Stirling isn't too far by train and kids go free on the train when travelling with an adult on Scotrail. Trains are quite regular and reasonably priced. Would also give you the option for a day trip on the train to Aviemore or suchlike
Witches Craig campsite gets a good write-up and close to Stirling. Public transport is also quite good around Stirling and there's also things like Stirling castle and Wallace Monument to explore.

How about Drum Mohr near Musselburgh? Nice quiet site, excellent bus and park-n-ride train connection to Edinburgh city centre, plenty of beaches along the coast, local shops etc down in Musselburgh but they also have a shop and good swingpark on the site. East Lothian is a great area to explore as well, btw.
If you can't get anywhere in Lothian you should take at look at Fife, just over the Forth and great train and bus links to Edinburgh and beyond..loads of good sites, take a look at the campsite search on here...

Well we have booked! I ended up caving in to my dd wanting to go in a Eurocamp tent so we are going to Cobleland in Stirlingshire. Not sure about whether we'll get to Edinburgh from there or not, but it looks like we'll have a fabulous time anyway, and it's all set up when we get there which I must say is mighty appealing!
I will be keeping all your suggestions for next time though
