Not wishing to be dramatic, but following recent stories in the press, wondered if anyone has ever encountered them while camping? There's often food lying around after all. I'd never thought about it until now.

Not me - I've seen crows and magpies dragging food bags out of tent porches, and at White Mark Farm in Watlington the red kites are so cheeky they come down and nick the dogfood from the campers' dog bowls (great if you like red kites, not great if you've a dog), but nothing unpleasant fortunately.

Donkeys ate all our food once, never even seen a fox on a campsite.

Actually, country foxes are very very shy and keep well away from humans. Its urban foxes that have lost their natural fear of humans, and are much more bold. Its probably the easy access to our left overs in bins that attracts them to our homes. I should think tents come and go too frequently for a fox to get to so used to it that it would sneak in.

I've never seen one in the countryside. Seen plenty in South London and Manchester. When I lived in Orpington, the streets would be littered with ripped rubbish bags on dustbin day and they used to come in the garden. I've also seen foxes just off Deansgate in Manchester on a Saturday night. Bold as brass.

I imagine country foxes are a lot shyer and more hesitant of people than urban ones. Depends where you go I suppose.

The recent news story is fresh in our minds but a rarity.

As others gave said, the country fox is a shyer animal than the urban ones. Never seen one on a campsite. More likely to see some of the larger birds and they can be intimidating. Have heard of New Forest ponies stealing food from in and around tents.

have had kookaburras nick t-bone steaks straight off the bbq!!!

but echoing above really

living in the country and being an avid fox hater (have seen what they do to chickens/ducks for the fun of it) they are incrediblt shy and would not come close to a tent (if they did they would scarper as soon as someone stirred, snored or coughed!

so no, its not something that i will be worrying about, even with my lo's asleep!

Hello stranger - since I've been 11 I have always lived out in the wilds (Outer Hebridies and now Cumbria)

In all that time I have only ever seen one fox - though I'm sure ther are no foxes at all in the Outer Hebridies.

We have found evidence of a visit from a fox in our awning- footprints etc and we saw one on the same site late at night when we went for a walk. thsis is a rural site.

We have foxes under a building 20 yards from our door, and one evening our cat flew through the catflap in a panic followed by a fox. Luckily only the fox head came through, but OH sitting a few feet away was quite shocked.
Lived here 13 years and they have never attacked the cats, but they used to have lots more space until a housing development was built over the fence, took a lot of their territory.
They are usually timid, they raise a litter here every year but it's really difficult to catch sight of the pups. However the bigger fox (presume male) does jump into our dogs enclosure in the evenings to check for any left over food.

I saw a fox at Burnham holiday village ( haven ) a few years ago. It was in the October holidays and it was walking through the pitches.

The Caravan Club site at Abbey Wood in London seems to have a semi tame fox that wanders around the campsite. Came almost face to face with one on a site in the Belgium Ardennes a couple of years ago after he rifled through the contents of our bin!

weve encounterd foxes on a few sights but only in a shy way they are actually scared of humans and generally wont come near they will sneak up to a cool bbq in the night and steal a piece of left over food but do not normally hang around to long ,its usually grab and run as far as you or your kids are concerned i can assure you they are safe as houses.do not worry p.s i am a grown man love the outdoors but terrified of rats they are out there but more scared of me so dont come near. p.s wife and daughters terrified of spiders do i need say more?oh and my freind who is scared of ducks .no it ends here.

You mean like this one in Cornwall

Wasn't a problem came around most days,
lovely to see both pictures taken from the doorway of our awning. But we were the only people in the camping field.
