I have a friend who's asking for suggestions for a tent friendly site in the New Forest.I haven't visited this area myself so thought of this excellent site for it's enthusiastic, knowledgable contributors. Any ideas? She wants to go next weekend.

Forestry Commission have lots of nice sites in the New Forest - some don't have loos so check details. Roundhill very nice - lots of space so you are not on top of each other - good luck!

I used to live in the area and camped frequently at the site near to Brockenhurst. Roundhills is a good one too.

we stay at setthorns in caravan as it has only electric and water no loos or showers but there were a lot of tents there in June. Recommend the Oak Inn in Bank for lunch, fantastic fresh food if you go, not too pricey either.

We stopped going to Forestry Commision sites as they became very expensive by the time you pay for children, weekends etc.   We have tried here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=8599 in Brockenhurst and also  http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results3.asp?search=red+shoot&by=sitename in Ringwood.   Would recommend both although in different parts of the New Forest.

I refuse to ever stay at a Forestry Commission site. Absolute bloody cheek to ban wild camping AND charge standard prices for sites which don't even have loos. I think there are a couple of independent ones, I suggest looking at those.

Stayed at Long Meadow a while back...loads of tents, beautiful setting, level, excellent facilities & walking distance to Brockenhurst through the forest.

Direct access to cycle paths/footpaths too

After many years I've given up with Roundill, and the others within the Forestry Commission group, as they were just charging silly money

Good luck with your search

Aren't they all expensive in the New Forest? I assumed the sites have to pay some extra rates/charges for being in such a protected area?

We went to Red Shoot last year (on our first ever family camping trip ) and it was something like £34 a night for a pitch with EHU - there's a good toilet block and the world's smallest playground but almost nothing else...we also went on a bank holiday so it was absolutely rammed, felt like a festival! However, out of season, it might be what the OP is looking for...?

UPDATE: interesting, just read the latest reviews on Red Shoot and they have removed 10 pitches this year to make it less cramped when full, so sounds like it could be greatly improved.
