We have decided on a goup trip August bank holiday which will include 4 (mature) ladies with thier dogs (6 in total!) in one caravan and one tent.  I can get over that problems but one of the group who has two - albeit well behaved - dogs; WILL not put the dogs on a leaders, believing they feel sad and trapped   I really dont want to be embarassed by having a site warden taking a member of our group to task.

The rest of us are happy to abide by the usual campsite rules - dogs on leads while on site etc but here I am trying to find the (near) impossible.  Oh and she would like to be able to have a fire too!

Can anyone help with site suggestions in the Northumberland/Borders/Yorkshire/Cumbria area?

(I can hear the mutters now ........ but you really cant say anything I havent already said - honest!)

Liz

hi there, to be honest i doubt you will find anywhere that does not state that dogs must be on leads. Best of luck

Hi Liz, I agree with Ang, I've never heard of a campsite that lets dogs roam free, you could look for a campsite that has a dog run though.
I'm afraid your friend will has a decision to make - stay at home with the dogs or put them on leads and let them have a great time camping.
My own Jack Russell is never tethered at home but he loves camping and being kept on a lead is just the price he has to pay.

Sorry Liz think that will be an impossible task, The very nature of the positioning of campsites in the countryside is that local farm animals have to be protected etc. I think I would just suggested tactfully that it is impossible to find a site that will allow dogs to roam free, Its then up to her wether she decides to abide by the rules or stays at home. Frankly those are the two options.

Don't envy your dilema though... Good luck!!

As other have said it is an impossible ask for any campsite, aside anything else the very nature of camping is that you are amoungst other people and animals and for the ladies own dogs safety a lead ( or slightly longer teathering line) is required, certainly where we live it is a little known fact that if a farmer perceives a dog to be worrying sheep/cattle they have the right to shoot the dog.

On the upside there are plenty of sites out there that are truely dog friendly and if it is any consolation we had the labrador forums rally with us over the whitsun period, which included 15 tents and 26 labradors, there was not a single problem, all were very well behaved on and off site, ALL were clean up after attending to their business in our small exercise area (where they can be off lead), they were far too tired from walks, seaside air and of course k9 hydrotherapy to want to make a murmer much after 8pm!  Many happy campers and happy dogs to boot = a very happy campsite!

Jakers - sounds like my idea of pure heaven!!

Thank you all for your replies - I guess I cant say I'm surprised by them - but then again as a dog owner of three I have a reasonably high dog tolerance but I dont want dogs wandering into our pitch either.  Not to mention my furchildren would set up some serious alarm barks just in case I hadnt seen the intruder - not fair on other campers.

Reading your responses at work (tut tut) but with my brain in 'work' mode it struck me that actually this is NOT my problem so why am I knocking myself out to find the perfect site for someone whose values I dont actually agree with - duh!  I have decided to throw the ball back into her court and let her find the site - if not I shall book a site anyway and if she chooses to come (or not) thats her decision.

Our dog is very obedient and is very good off lead but when camping I go on the mantra that if ours isnt on a lead or tethered we can't complain if another dog isnt!

I doubt any site would let them be free on the site itself and August bank hol will be full wherever you go, would she maybe settle for a site with an off lead dog walk on site or good dog walks nearby?

Most dogs after a decent run are more than happy to lie on their beds outside and chill out and wont even know they are attached to a stake on the end of a lead.

Surely she puts them on leads whenever they're walked near a road at least?

We allow dogs "off the lead" as long as they stay put beside their owner at all times and do not go wandering off to annoy children, other dogs or wading sea birds.

Our pitches are right beside the sea, you can just walk onto the beach and let them run along the shore. We do request that you watch them at all times and pick up after them.

We also allow camp fires on the beach, most people go beach combing for driftwood.

As the Scottish schools are back mid August, the August bank-holiday is not too busy for us and children on site can be small, but no guarantees.

Perhaps we are a little too far away for you ?
