We have just returned from our first weekend meet. We usually go on certified sites or locations but ones in the area we wanted were full. We thought we would give a meet a try as we had arranged for our kids to go sphering and the latest time the site did this was 7.30pm Friday evening. (We had to use the sphering vouchers this weekend or lose them)

We had to get from Blackpool to Macclesfield putting the folding camper up at the meet on the way. We picked the kids up from school at 3pm and whizzed down the motorway well at least part way as we spent three hours in traffic trying to get to the meet (usually a maximum one and half hour journey and because of this we had to leave the camper at the meet without putting it up. (We checked if ok with the organisers) We then rushed onwards to where the sphering was held and after this (the sphering takes all of 30 seconds!) we rushed back to the meet - not arriving back until about 8.45pm.

Fortunately there were only about 15 units on the meet - the nearest about 300 yards away from us. We immediately put the folding camper up - not the awning and put up a pop up tent for our daughter. We did debate whether we should set the camper up as it was late but lots of children were still playing out and a dog barked fairly incessantly, so felt that we wouldn't be too much of a nuisance.

Later when our daughter went to her tent, the zip broke so we exchanged it for another pup tent conscious that we had to knock four pegs in and hoping we hadn't disturbed anyone.

By 7am the following morning some children and their father plus barking dog were running around and shouting. We were going out early anyway and were soon eating our breakfast immediately outside the camper. While we were doing this the children - egged on by their father were racing right up to our camper and running back and forth, with the dog barking madly.

Now we are not of the children should be silent party but I do object to children running right up inches away from me and my family while we eat. However we felt that this might have happened because we changed our daughters tent late at night so didn't feel we could say much as it was maybe in retaliation - although our disturbance wasn't deliberate.

However when we returned in the afternoon this carried on until well after 10.30 pm. Despite there being over half a field to play in and a gap of 300 yards between the family's caravan and our camper, they were still racing right up to it or right at the side. The occupants were obviously friendly with the organisers as they were all chatting away and we seemed to be the only strangers. No-one else seemed at all concerned by the constant barking of the dog. We also felt guilty about being late the night before so we didn't complain but left as early as possible on Sunday and won't go on such a meet again.

Sorry for going on only it was such a disappointment.

What a shame to have such a bad experience on your first meet.  Don't let it put you off.  We felt like the odd ones out on our first weekend meet because everybody seemed to know each other.  Also, when we arrived with our F/C we were told to put our jockey wheel on the pitch marker.  After trying to explain that this wouldn't suit our camper we did as we were told & of course we were too close to the caravan next door.  We were then told to move which involved refolding, moving, & unfolding again.  After a busy day at work & travelling in peak hour traffic my husband was very close to packing up & going home.  However, we stayed, enjoyed the campsite, & our daughter joined in the organised games while I watched from the sidelines & hubby relaxed at the camper.  So it turned out to be quite a good weekend. The people were quite friendly & we had achat with a few of them. My husband is not too keen to try again, but we  had an excellent break at a THS & have another booked for August, so we might try a meet again one day.

Its so annoying when people don't respect your space.  Our neighbours at the weekend allowed their dog to run wildly around around the campsite from our field, around the corner to the other field where the others in their party were camped.  I don't think they took their dog offsite at all so it must have done all its business in the field somewhere.  I know there was some dog dirt on the way to the toilets but I'm not sure which dog in their group might have done it. It was picked up next day so either they saw it or someone complained.

We also belonged to another club which had rallies & found that children were alllowed to run wild & into/around other peoples units - it was hard to tell our daughter not to do that when she was part of the crowd.

Anyway, we will try again some day,

homebird
