Southport Caravan Club site is very good, but gets booked up quickly.

Kneps Farm at Thornton Cleveleys - not right on the coast but it's on the Wyre estuary so pretty close. Adjacent to Wyreside Country park so lots of good dog walking and cycling - a walk/cycle round to Skipool Creek on a sunny day is nice

Hollins Farm, Silverdale is a fantastic site... Quiet and very well kept, there are a couple of small beaches nearby (Silverdale and Arnside).

Also you can use the facilities at Holgates site next door (pool, bar etc)

Bay View at Bolton le sands is lovely site and nice walks.

camp chaos - I've been to Gibraltar Farm. Fantastic site but as you say the beach isn't up to much. More mud than sand. Of course the kids don't mind but they do look like they've had a serious mud bath by the time they've finished.
