A lot of fellow campers are very rightly attracted to West Scotland, but please allow me to put in a plug for the North east.

From the far north at Dunnet Bay, there are excellent quiet beaches, down the east coast through Brora (with the Clynelish distillery) and on to the lovely village of Dornoch and the Black Isle - great for dolphin & whale spotting.

Passing through Inverness, you come to the Culloden battlefield and then Cawdor castle. There are a number of great unspoiled beaches along the Moray coast befor you get to 'my patch' in N.Aberdeenshire.

This is a great area for quiet clean beaches and coastal walks. The county council have joined up various footpaths to provide a walking route along most of the Aberdeenshire coast. Most seaside towns have either municipal or privately owned campsites.

Going through Cullen, Portsoy, Banff and then Fraserburgh, the road turns south and heads towards Aberdeen, bypassing the picturesque village of Cruden Bay with its world class golf course.

It's different to the west coast, but no less beautiful. I really would recommend this area as an alternative to the west.

Here's a picture of the beach at Cullen taken last August Bank Holiday!

Not having a Canvas tent I don't really think about camping in Scotland but the beach at Cullen looks lovely. We/if we get a canvas tent we'll think about heading up there...

Noobs - we don't have a canvas tent but camp in Scotland all the time. The weather isn't really as bad as some people would have you believe honest! Come and visit us up here - we are lovely

I'm a big fan of Aberdeenshire .... Silverbank CC site at Banchory and the Esplanade site at Fraserburgh are on the list every year.

Not keen on Silverbank. Prefer the municipal site at Ballater or (my favourite) The Invercauld, Braemar.

I do most of my shopping in Fraserburgh. The site was a bit busier today, but was quieter earlier in the week.
For those who dont know it, the site is right by the beach, and a short walk to Tesco, Lidl and the Brewdog brewery!

We were a bit disapointed in Burghead. The Caravan Park is right on the beach but that is only 7 miles of golden sand and it was really overcrowded with at least another 3 people on it!!!!

and we've less midges on the East Coast    I wont say none as we do get them sometimes.

The campsite in Wick is lovely.  I haven't stayed there as I live just across the river from it, but the people who own it are very helpful.  Only a couple of miles from a quiet sandy beach, we have the Old Pultney distillery, Sinclair and Girnigoe castles (ruins) and the Heritage Centre is worth a visit for the history of the area and the  fishing fleet etc

Lots of places in the area for dog walking too, with lovely scenery.

Cullen is a lovely place, but I've never stayed there yet, only passed through

In between Cullen and Portsoy is the small fishing village of Sandend. We stayed at the site there in June, more or less had the whole beach to ourselves.

Liked it that much we are going back next month for a longer period.

Sandend is only a small place with no shops (except the camp reception).. However you can walk along the coastal path past the ruins of Finlater castle to Sunnyside beach (only accessable on foot) and on to Cullen or the other way to Portsoy (no beach, but an interesting village that hosts the annual Scottish boat festival)

Sunnyside beach - there are some interesting rock formations for the budding geologist
