We have rarely had to pay upfront, each site is different, maybe they have had a lot of no shows. Have you looked to see if there is anywhere else in the area?
Ive also noticed a few sites wanting payment up-front esp. on Hol weekends- yes maybe folk havent turned up. Id never pay up front as if I didnt like the site Id feel I had to stay ....I dont think paying up front is the norm....
hi ive decided not to pay up front and am searching for other campsites in the area , also just rang another campsite and they want a deposit of £20 but they have no electric hook ups avalibale which is ok if they weather is nice !!

I think it does vary a fair bit...some sites that we go to,want full payment up front..where as others, aren't even that concerned what outfit you have or bother to take any contact details!?
...I suppose we are all paying for the "no-shows" in one ways or other...
I would go a bit further out than Fareham as there are many pretty area's close by try Burseldon, Hayling Island. Chichester, Witterings, and all are approx 30 mins (except Witterings which would be nearer 45mins) by car away from Fareham as there is a very good motorway connection!!

Just wanted to say don't Judy camping based on a bank holiday weekend as every time we camp at these times we end up being over charged and packed in like sardeens, having said that my wife holds off till the last minute meaning we end up with the dregs. Then I get the plesure of the told you so with a smile on my face, love it.
I don't mind paying up front because I usually check out all the reviews on sites I wish to go to and also do a google search on satelite view and street view so I have a pretty good idea what the site and the surrounding area looks like. I may even check out the area online through the tourist board or town websites etc.
The only thing that would put me off a site on arrival is to be offered a rough pitch unsuitable for my tent, because that would spoil the whole weekend. This has happened on many occasions but in most cases I have been offered an alternative and a more suitable pitch. (Can't understand why I keep being offered the pitches nobody else wants...perhaps I look an easy pushover )
Bearing in mind that one normally pays anyway before being shown the pitch, on the rare occasions the site has been unable to offer me a reasonable pitch I have managed to get my money back and find somewhere more suitable elsewhere.
I have only willingly paid upfront for camping at Wicksteed park (great for families).
I have noticed as well though that alot of places charge more for b/h weekends - quite cheeky really....
Last year we booked up for a b/h in Kings Lynn, the chap took my card details he said it was in case we were a no show, that he wouldn't use it and that we could pay cash when we arrived. The day after I booked my Hubby found out he had to work that weekend so I rang straight up to cancel and he had already put the payment through, even though he said he wouldn't.
He apparently couldn't give refunds back but offered us to come back whenever we liked.
We weren't impressed and have no yet used...
Off camping next weekend just can't decide where??
