can anyone help with the best route from Overbrook park, Thorton Le Dale, Pickering, Yorkshire, YO18 7SE to Castlerigg Hall, Keswick, Cumbria,CA12 4TE towing a 21ft caravan. All the route finders tell us at Sutton Bank bear left onto the A170 signposted Thirsk then continue on to A61 towards Ripon, which is fine but at the Sutton Bank instruction it says caravans prohibited! Does any one know is this becauseof reversing difficulties or narrow roads or just not suitable. Any help with an alternative route, as we dont know the area at all  would be very much appreciated.

Sutton bank is more like a cliff than a road!! It's VERY steep and not suitable for most cars/caravans. Perhaps a powerful tug and a small van would be OK, but otherwise it's best avoided. Most route planners should allow you to specify avoiding it.

Though Sutton bank is a no go for caravans its awalk in the park for cars and vans if your used to the Lake district! To get back to your question Beveley, follow the A170 through Helmsley and about 1 1/2 miles past Helmsley follow the signs for the caravan route avoiding Sutton Bank follow this route through Ampleforth, Wass,Coxwold, and on to the A19 from here go onto the A168 and then A1 North at Scotch corner turn onto the A66 and stay on this road until you see the first turn off for Keswick take this for about 3/4 mile until a junction with the A591 signposted Grasmere, Ambleside etc its a climb uphill for about 1mile until you see Castlerigg signposted on the right with a brown campsite sign, Castlerigg is on your right after 1/4 mile

Yes it is like a cliff, with a very sharp bend about half way up.  For that reason ALL caravans are strictly prohibted from using it.  Dont even try it, use the caravan route instead.

Anniemacx i agree that caravans are prohibted from Sutton Bank but driving up and down it in a car is not a problem i do not understand why people go on about the bank its nothing special there is only one bend on it that create's problems for caravans or more correctly the drivers of the tow cars, before caravans were banned i towed up and down it without problem even now artics and vans with large trailers go up and down it every day,i'll leave my final words on this to my OH who is frightened of hights, on getting to the top her first time she turned to me and said "when do's it start"!
