I'd say to get the most out of a seasonal pitch, you'd want to be closer than 3 hours away. If you intend using it at weekends (and you have to really to get your money's worth), I'd say 1.5 hours is far enough. It means you can still go early on a Saturday morning and get a decent weekend in.
We're just finishing our first seasonal year, and used the caravan far more than we would have had we still been towing. Yes, you are 'stuck' at the same place, but, if you like it, why not?! We have a journey of about 1.25 hours, and have often gone on a Saturday morning if we've been out the Friday evening.
Good luck in your search.
