Hi all

Unfortunately due to my husbands medical condition we have to visit Addenbrookes every 3 months and the appointments normally fall on a Friday, we live in Essex so was thinking of making this into a weekend break with the caravan.

Can anyone suggest a site that way, have already looked on the search facility here but most seem to be members sites, or Stanford Park which looks like a 21 age restriction:(

Maximum half hour drive would be good.

Thanks

Both clubs have sites nearby, should take non-members, if not try Highfield Farm at Comberton, a Best of British site,

Hope you find somewhere.

We stayed at the cc&c site a couple of years ago and thought it was lovely.  Though with the new road being open now it should be easier to try a site further afield :)

Sorry i've not really answered your question have i

Thanks for replies.

Took a look at Highfield Farm and it looks ok, may give it a try.

Was up that way for appointment in October and the new road wasn't open then, has it been a recent thing? Presume you mean the road that would eliminate going through Trumpington!

Yes it has recently opened :)  Heard it on the news the other night and we all got excited about it lol.  It's been a nightmare getting there and i'd prefer to use the Lister Hospital in Stevenage as that is closer but sometimes it's quicker to get an appointment at Addenbrookes than it is to get one at Lister.

It's taken us ages with all the road works etc going on for the past couple of years so the news would be greeted with excitement lol.  We will be using it on the 24th November for the 1st time so hoping it makes a difference

Hope you find a good site soon :)

Hi Ashwell

Let me know what you think of the new road, we're there next in January so maybe not a caravanning weekend then, but the next time in April will look at a weekend stop.

I would second Highfield Farm at Comberton. We had some friends stay there in their campervan when we lived in the village and they loved it. Probably a 10 minute drive to Addenbrookes - a lot more in rush hour though!

A closer site would be the Caravan Club site at Cherry Hinton. Open all year and very close to the hospital.

The Camping and Caravan club site at Shelford would allow you to try out the new road but that site is closed in the winter!

Not tried these sites personally as I live in Cambridge - I just know where they are in relation to Addenbrookes!

Bob, Cambridge.

Thanks Bob

As not members of the C&CC or the Caravan Club and begrudge paying the extra non members fees ontop of all the other costs, will try Highfield farm when the weathers warmer.

Thanks for the nod.

Hi Pumfretts

We visited Cambridge a couple of years ago with a view to visiting my sister-in-law who in Addenbrookes. We stayed here:

Lostacres, Twentypence Road, Cottenham, Cambridge, CB248PP. Tel: 01954 251151.

Mrs Wiffen the owner lives in the bungalow and was friendly and helpful. It's a CC CL site but she may be prepared to let you stay even if you're not members. She never checked our CC membership anyway!!

Ths site is field behind a bungalow a little way outside the village of Cottenham and accessed by a drive at the side of the bungalow. Mrs Wiffen, the owner, lives in the bungalow and was friendly and helpful. It's a very quiet site set away from the main road. There is some hardstanding and EHUs and loo & shower at the rear of the bungalow for 'vanners' use. The site is said to be open all year.

It was fine for us as we only wanted a base to site the 'van whilst visiting my sister-in-law. It was about 14.8 miles/30 mins from the site to Addenbrooke's Hosp according to my Tom Tom using a route which skirted the centre of Cambridge. It was, also, an easy to drive into Cambridge. We did not get around as much as we might have done as our car broke down as we drove onto the site, really, and was not repaired until we were due to leave 5 days later. We relied on Father-in-Law picking us up.

The current, 2009/10 CC book gives the cost as £8.50 per night.

I'm assuming that the site is still open as Mrs Wiffen was quite elderly when we visited the site in October 2008 and the CC Site Directory is nearing the end of its 2 year "life".

I hope this helps.

Tim
