There is a commercial site on the coast road halfway between the two. It will also be on a bus route. It's between Sunderland and South Shields. I don't know the name but I think the address is Lizard Lane near Marsden.

there is only one site to consider for sunderland and newcastle caravan club site at durham grange it is off junction 62 at carrville/belmont the park and ride to durham is nearby the motorway to newcastle is adjacent as is the a690 to sunderland trains are available from durham or chester le street if you don't want to take the car into the metropolis
the campsites on the coast at shields are a no go don't even consider them
there is nothing between sunderland and newcastle not between durham and newcastle it all rests at the grange durham you won't regret it I am sure
Another one for the Grange at Carrville, nice site. I live four miles away from it but visit friends when they come up there from down south, much better than S/Shields
Before even considering Lizard Lane and Sandhaven, read the reviews and if your baby-sitter is already in Newcastle, get him/her to go and look at both of these sites. During our visit in June, several of the residential pitch holders were complaining, convinced that they were being "persuaded" out so that only statics would be left there. From the Sandhaven website - "Touring charges for the 2010 season Due to park re-development we will be taking no tourer bookings this season. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will have much improved tourer pitches available for the 2011 season, keep checking our website for details." - perhaps.... One of the few (out-of-date) websites for Lizard Lane will actually point you to the owners (Littlehaven Hotel) of the caravan site - you need to phone them to make a (sort-of!) booking... We have been going to one or the other for over twenty years, but that is now finished - we will now probably use Byreside from now on, although it's a bit further from our family in Hebburn.
