If it helps, we camped at Horgabost last year, you can park your car next to your tent.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

Hi Spicera, There is such a campsite on Harris. Probably tyhe only one and we camped there for 4 nights in Aug 2008.
It is run by the local community and back then it was £4 per night.
There is a toilet block that has hot showers and a CDP at the rear. .

The whole campsite is on the Macher next to one of thee most beautiful beaches I have ever seen.

I have heard this campsite called a number of different names but I know it as Cnip CP on the Uig Peninsula.
You will find it at Map Ref;- 105358

The campsite at Cnip
Uig CP

The "crowded beach" by the campsite.
Uig Beach

From reading your mail, the only thing that you have asked for that I cannot help you with is a Surfing Beach. Perhaps someone else could answer that one.

Lobey - one of my most fav beaches. I know it as Valtos (or Reef) beach. The Common Grazing committe run it.
I first camped there when my oldest son was about a year old (so about 24 years ago) but had been for day trips many, mnay times.
It's good to walk right to the end of it then over the machair to the bay at the other side - some great rock pools and rocks/becah and never a soul on there.
I also like the walk up the hill to the back of the beach up to the loch.

Found this is a good site for surfing beaches in the UK

Little Derek used to have the Surf Shop in Sty - not sure if he's still there or the shop

As for surfing - they do a lot of body boarding and the like over the west side at Dal Mor/Dal Beag - one is better than the other - think it's the big one Dal Mor (mor is big, beag is little)

I was not sure whether to start a new topic with my query, but as this one seems to be discussing the sort of things I need to know, I hope Merry does not mind me hijacking it!

We are planning to head to the Outer Hebrides this August. Unfortunately we have no option but to go then as my husband is a teacher. We have some very specific requirements though, and I don't know if anyone will be able to advise me...

We want to be based on Harris, on the request of my 70-year old mother, who always comes with us on our main summer camping holiday. We last went to Harris when I was about 5 (ie 35 years ago...eeek!) and she has never forgotten it. She wants to go again as perhaps her last hurrah, before she 'gets too old for camping'.

So here is what we want: a campsite on Harris, not Lewis. Preferably on the West coast. And one where cars can be parked near to the tents (this is more for the benefit of mum's dog who does not sleep well in tents, and prefers to sleep in the car). This takes <FONT color=#ff0000>Lickisto  and <FONT color=#ff0000>Horgabost  out of the picture, as both of them appear to have cars parked in seperate areas to the camping areas. BUT, advice on this would be very welcome, if they are not too far away.

We also want to stay in the same place for 10 days to 2 weeks, as my hubbie seriously need to chill, so touring is not an option this time, although we are wanting to explore as much of the island as possible. Lewis can wait for a future holiday. Good walking and good beaches nearby essential, with the possibilty of surfing for husband and sons a desirable option. We are quite happy with very basic facilities (fav. campsite ever was at Achnahaird in Summer Isles, RIP, which only had cold water and no showers).

So, am I asking too much? If this is just not available, we probably need to talk to mum about the car being away from tent area, or consider Lewis instead.

Thanks everyone.

Not sure if you still can but Hushinish used to let you camp on the machair with car next to it and i've seen the same at Scarista (just tried to phone home to ask but getting no reply)

As they aren't huge then you'll have plenty of time to chill if you only plan on staying in Harris.

Hi. Keely has suggested elsewhere that the Hebrides would be an interesting choice for a slightly different family holiday, including surfing.

But I am clueless. Where do the ferries go from and to? Where to stay, which beaches, which campsites? Would there be midges in early July?

Help!

Have you thought about Tiree, possibly the best surfing in the UK(?) and amazing beaches.  I work out there alot and i really love the place, there is an amazing amount of stuff to keep you all occupied.  Its also one of the cheapest fares around due to the RET (road equivalent tariff).  You can use this as a starter if you want to go further up the hebrides, as the Clansman stops off at Tiree en-route to Barra 2 or 3 times a week in the summer.  On the subject of midges, they are never that bad on the islands(well compared to mainland argyll!) as there is always a breeze, but if you do get them bad one night there is always a nic pub to visit

The hebrides are a very special place and somewhere i should be visiting more often.

Thanks everyone for your replies, they have been really useful.
Suffering from a nasty cold at the moment, but dreaming of fresh island and sea air now, can't wait for our trip!
