Hi folks,
We have visited "shell" more times than I can remember over the years but in recent times found it to be getting to noisy and rowdy as it's popularity grows. I know this may not be everyones cup of tea as a camping experience but there has always been a magical feeling about the place that keeps on bringing us back.
I just wanted to know if anyone out there has any suggestions of sites that are of this type - basic, on the coast and camp where you like sites that allow camp fires?
Can you help us?

Have a look at Cae Du a few miles north of Tywyn (not to be confused with the Beddgelert site of the same name).

Well we just turned up (in late August), but it might be a good idea to ring them especially if you're going on bank holiday weekends.

Lynn Gwynant Just down the road in Beddgelert. Ok, it's not on the coast but it is on the edge of a lake and fits all your other criteria.

The other alternative, of course, is to go to Shell Island out of season.

I'll second Cae Du. Magnificent place. As I said on another thread a while ago, occasionally you might hear the roar of the sea above the roar of the wind :)

we are going to cae du for sure hope it's not too busy when we go as we have 2 young children and school hols are the only chance to do more than a weekend !
Has anyone got any suggestions for the devon/somerset areas?

Can't think of any (ticking all your boxes) off hand, but I wonder if you've looked on the South West Sites section on Camp Site Search Sites allowing Open Fires list?

Does anyone have any photos of cae du at all? As they have no website i'd like to see it somehow, I'm planning a 40th bday get together for 4 families and we all have toddlers so location is important, it sounds fantastic mind! I'm having to weigh up the weather odds and make sure there's somewhere to escape to if it gets very bad, I'm thinking/hoping the barn with settees might be good for that? Not sure how big it is though.

Dawn - all pictures on my profile were taken at Cae Du.

The beach a few yards from our tent pitch, the facilities block (centre, the shelter is in the larger part of the building) and the steam train which for the last few years has run on August weekdays (excuse the sloping horizon!).

Not sure if it's going to be to dangerous for 3 yr olds...... The 4/5 yr olds will be ok I'm sure but the younger ones I'm not so sure about.
