As you are already sorted till Sept

I will give you a report later this year after we've been,,,,  not sure when we will be there, always go with the weather at Shell

But now groups not allowed, and the wardens still in place, as we go to the right-hand side,  mostly families never had a problem yet and don't expect one.

But, and there's always a but.  Increase of   ex - package holidayers expected this year. Shell and the like, will no doubt get their fair share.  So I shall report on conditions when I get there.

We went last August Bank holiday - it was busy but not overly crowded I have seen it far busier on a normal summer weekend - we went on the harbour side as usual and I have never known it so quiet. We were 8 families in tents and trailer tents loads of teenagers and toddlers and we had a bit of a campfire/barbeque/party on the Saturday night but all very civilised and over by 11pm and everyone quiet by 12.

We had a portaloo and took all our own supplies so didn't need to go to the shops/loos/showers much but when we did they were fine. The portaloos were OK too.

In my humble opinion Shell Island is no worse than many other sites around the country - I had one night last year on a very posh site in Dorset when a couple of blokes pitched up their tent right next to ours in an empty field while we were out and proceeded to get very p***ed and fell out with each other and nearly set fire to their tent and ours, kept us up most of the night. Never had that at Shell.

I think the trick is 1) pitch light for the first night and if you have really awful neighbours you can always move and 2) take a porta-potti and a bowl for washing (remember you only used to have a bath once a week when you were a kid).

We were going to try Devon or Cornwall this year for our hols but TBH we can have 2 weeks on Shell for less than 1 week down south in August.

Despite all I've said I would still recommend to anyone that they go mid week or at least not in the school holidays (unfortunately I have a child and a job so I can't)

Thing with Shell Island is it's all things to all people. If you're prepared to be self sufficient and go a little further away from the main facilities you're quite likely to find a little piece of heaven. Camp further in and you'll find a party.

This is not a new thing with Shell Island, it's always been like this. I used to go there on lads camping trips 20 years ago. If I'm honest the place isn't really my cup of tea these days but you are spoilt for choice of lovely sites in that area.

Try this place its beautiful and very close to shell island. River runs through the site, safe for children to play in. Only a short walks to the waterfalls. open fires on all pitches. Note: steep and narrow road to site. No large groups allowed
