That last story was rather sad.  I'm glad the little chap found somewhere at last.

I always take my dog with us but it has been a problem when we want to go to some attractions.  I agree that it would be really great if those which won't allow dogs in were to provide some sort of kennelling.  I don't think I would like a day kennel attached to the campsite.  Not only would the dogs in there be likely to make a noise but they could well start off other dogs on the site.

I would be happy to pay for a day's kennelling locally which would free us up to do non-doggy things.

We have used day kennels in the past, and will continue to do so when we go to places that don't take dogs. We try and get a recommendation, but if not have a chat with the kennel staff first, and check their licensed etc.

Usual cost is £10 - £12 per day.  We are using one in Devon over the summer which is £12.50.  If a campsite had kennels we would certainly use them - as long as they were licensed and properly run rather than just been a little "add on" to the site.

julia you made me cry you witch, the thought of that wee jack russell searching for his master has finished me off, they are very loyal and yes very vocal for intruders, the worst dogs are the little dogs there are two female pommeranians in the next street to me and quite a bit down, and i can hear their constant barking even when im miles away up the fields with my dogs they have a distinctive bark, unless your dog has been used to kennels from a pup then i wouldnt do it ,and are they going to check if they have been innoculated, then there,s kennel cough etc etc,if this is all just for a day out i dont like it ,my opinion i suppose, but i wouldnt go to a campsite where they had dogs in an add on kennel

Sadly the rescue centres are full of doggies with stories such as the one of Titch the JRT, My dad was a founding member of the rescue centre and before it was built often took a dog or two in for fostering whilst a new home was found.

The ones that spring to mind are Kato, the Fushia Pink coloured Japanese Akita, his coat dyed by his owners as a prank to match their punk lifestyle, they could afford to buy hair dye, but not to feed him, he was found weak and starving. then there was the Greyhound, who was dumped in a layby on the A50, tied to a waste bin, but slipped his colar and was hit by a car, he came to us needing major surgery, but after several weeks of care and rehab he was happily rehomed with only his scars to show for it, Also the little Yorkie, Pint, whos coat was so mattered that he had to be strip shaved, leaving his coat behind which was so stiff with dirt it stood up on the table all by itself, hardly his owners fault though, as they were themselves in poor health, and the social services care they recieved didnt include dog grooming, so he was eventually given up for adoption and came to us.

I could tell you of loads of similar stories, luckily most have happy endings with new owners, or they become long term residents of the centre due to needing daily treatment for health problems such as Diabetes or cancers where their owners could no loger afford the expensive treatment from their vet, or dogs who are considered not suitable to be out in a public place due to temperament, sadly this group includes some dogs previously trained by their owners to fight for gain or are considered to be dangerous dogs by breed type.

If anyone would like to take a look around the place, they do open days with Teas and attractions such as Dog shows and Agility, fun days and gift shop, all staffed by volunteers, they also now have a cattery in what was once my spot for running the Hot food area and summer social events when the place first opened

They do run a very good boarding Kennel for anyone wishing to visit Derbyshire, although early booking is advised as its quite a popular one as all profits go towards the charity.

We have 2 dogs who love caravanning!  If we want to do things where dogs are not allowed I usually do a search online to find kennels local to where we're staying.  I will usually contact 2 or 3 via email or phone before booking one.

I think that although day kennels onsite sound like a good idea, many dogs probably do bark and pine for their owners once left.  And I agree that once one starts barking the rest join in - if our staffie X is barking at something our cocker often joins in - barking cos she can!!!
