hi , we are wanting to spend a few days in summer visiting london, does anyone recommend a campsite (we have a tent with ehu)where we dont need to use the car and use public transport (tube/bus) to get into the city, so preferably a site near a bus stop or tube station..many thanks

Haven't camped in London myself but check the link below for campsites in and around London. Not sure what type of site you're looking for but the reviews should be able to help you choose and they detail how to get into London and how long the journey will take.
abbey wood caravan club site. Excellent site and take tents. Close to tube station ad shops yet has a countryside feel. Would not hesitate to use again
Crystal Palace CC site also fills your requirements.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I've looked into Lees Valley for myself. We'd be coming from the North, so it's location is convenient. Apparently, transport into the city is under an hour.

Both of the Lee Valley sites heve excellent public transport links to Central London / West End.
we stoped at lee valley chingford for us family of five it was great bus picks you up on campsite and takes you to tube station around 30 mins and then into cental london in 15/20 mins
As above we have done Lee Valley Chingford, a lovely site, a bit of countryside near the city! Also its 5 mins of the M25, the bus turnaround is at the camp entrance, tickets are available at the shop, times are as above.
A lot of campers at Chertsey last year were using the site as a base for London - really nice peaceful site on the banks of the Thames with a couple of nice foodie pubs a short walk away.
