Hi,

We are thinking about going to the old farm campsite praa sands, but we cannot find much information/reviews about it apart from on its website.

Has anyone been there? What was it like? Was there much to do out and about.

Many Thanks

I don't know where the Old Farm campsite is but we stay on a site 2 miles from Praa and the area is fantastic.

Praa Sands itself is a lovely beach. Usually good waves for bodyboarding and surfing, kayak hire, surf lessons, shop, cafe, bar, toilets. Only a couple of miles from Helston where there are a couple of supermarkets. Within 30 mins drive you have Lands End, St Ives (beautiful and the boat trips to seal island are an absolute must), Falmouth (great castle, shops, restaurants and the Maritime museum) and all the lovely coves on the Lizard. This will be our 5th year and we still have a long list of places there that we haven't been to yet - usually because the weather is so nice we spend too much time in the sea at Praa! If you don't mind an hour's drive, treat yourself to a trip to the Pandora Inn at Mylor Bridge. Beautiful old thatched pub with lovely open fires and fab food - make sure you go at high tide so you can sit out on the pontoon and catch the crabs (they all but jump onto the line for you!)

Do you mean Higher Pentreath Farm campsite at the west end of Praa Sands beach? If so, you will find nine reviews on the UKCS page (above) .

I've just found the Old Farm site on google maps - a bit nearer to the beach than Higher Pentreath. It looks like just a small field and the website says the only facilities are a shower block. Looks lovely though and it's only a couple of minutes walk down to the beach. Just remembered there's a fab fish & chip restaurant there too.

Got me all excited about our Cornwall trip now - roll on May!

I don't know if you know this already, if so tell me to shut up, but when you do go there don't pronounce it "Prar" Sands even though that's how it looks as if it should. Apparently the correct way to say it is "Pray" Sands. Don't ask me why.

A Cornish term for Ants I.E Holiday makers swarming all over the place like Ants !

If you are in Devon you may well be called a Grockle. I don"t know the meaning of that term other than you are not a local.

That shot makes me wish I was there now !

I heard on the grapevine that the clampers are very active as a mate surfing yesterday got done for £85 ! Robbers, I detest them.

Remember that as a generality, the stress tends to fall on the second syllable of Cornish place names - think of Penzance. Other examples are R'druth (not Redruth).

Places ending 'eath' are usually pronounced without the 'a' modifying (giving 'eth' not 'eeth') as in Lanreth and Polzeth. Porttreath is an excveption seemingly - I've only ever heard it pronounced P'treeth.

As well as Fowey (Foy) and Praa (Pray), other well-known oddities include Mousehole pronounced Mowzzle and St Austell pronounced S'nozzle.
