Hi, does anyone know of any good campsites in the New Forest which have the ponies roaming freely, we are looking to go for a weekend in May sometime, it can be quite basic, but would prefer elec hook ups, toilets, and hopefully allows dogs. Although if its just a weekend we could live without the electricity (and dog) and do 'proper' camping !!.

Hi I live near The New Forest and I must say, although I have never been to any yet (we are newbies!) they are supposed to be good, although pricey as thomo said. Always busy in the summer, when I have driven by. It is a beautiful area, with lots of lovely villages, beaches and things to do/visit. Also Southampton has the best retail shopping centre for miles!! As you can probably tell, I am proud to live here, we seem to have it all!! lol
Whichever site you decide on, make sure food is carefully covered and stored with a lid. The ponies sniff out any food and are known to enter tents. I didn't have that problem but a friend did.

I used to live in the area and often camped at the one near to Brockenhurst, but it was supposed to be changing to just caravans. I'm not sure whether it has or not.
Roundhills was superb as well, but as Fotogen says, you will need to be very careful not to let the animals smell any food left in the tent.
We stayed at Long Meadow campsite near Brockenhurst last August Bank Holiday for a family camping weekend (see Here) with three units all told (1 Caravan,1 Tent & 1 VW Camper) Had a great weekend. Site borders on to the forest and you can walk out of the gate and be in the middle of the forest immediately. Whilst ponies are fenced out the deer do manage to get in and there is a regular herd which congregates in the adjoining field and pass through the campsite at night.
The site has about a dozen EHU around the edge of the field - big pitches and plenty of room for kids to play.
P.S This is "real" camping with dogs welcome also.

I personally would suggest a campsite where the ponies are kept out. They can be dangerous if they think there is food about and have been known to wreck tents. I have never camped in any of the New Forest sites but I do have experience of some very nasty ponies including a dented car many years ago...I keep well clear of them

My friend camped in the New Forest a few years ago and left her food in her tent. She was woken by a noise at around 4am and had the fright of her life as right before her bleary eyes was a horse's head in her tent rummaging through her food and having a good ol' munch! Yep, it unzipped her tent with it's teeth and got in!
I've stayed at Ashurst a couple of times. It's a forest holidays site with some horses venturing in. It's great for access to the forest, but I'm not sure whether there's electric hookup.
Do consider that, as others have mentioned, the horses when they do visit are very bold. They will stick their head in the tent and eat anything! Make sure all food is put away in plastic boxes with lids. Cardboard boxes and carrier bags are no match for a New Forest pony wanting what's inside!
However, I don't think the sites that have horses roaming normally allow dogs.
