We've stayed here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=8754 and have booked for a couple of bank holidays later this year - it's literally across the road from the beach (sand and pebble mix). You need to be C&CC members and book ahead as there's only 5 EHUs. £13 a night in low season. They didn't have showers last year but the website is now showing they do have them so that must be a recent addition. I know that the tea room and shop will not be open in 2011 but there's a shop on the site next door (walkable).
Nice farm for the kids to wander round and feed animals and there's a swimming pool on the caravan site next door (heated indoor) which you can use for a small fee. Nice food pub right next to campsite.
If you want a bit more action you can get the steam train from Blue Anchor station into Minehead and visit Butlins for a day if that's the kind of thing the family would enjoy.
