Hi all,

Just wondering if most people book up sites in advance for stays in the school summer holidays or leave it until last minute?

If anyone does leave to the last minute - do you have any trouble getting on the sites you want?

Years ago we used to just go and choose where to stay when we got there but now its probably best to book. There is nothing worse than trawling round looking for somewhere to stay after a long drive.

If I'm going away in the school holidays I tend to book in advance as they get full very quickly! I have already missed out on going to one site this year as it's fully booked!

Occassionally we decide on an impromtu weekend away and we have managed to get booked in with just 24 hours notice but it does involve ringing around a few sites to find one with room!

I have rarely booked more than a few days in advance. This included when I was working, Mrs. L worked in a school office and we had 3 school age children. If you're flexible, you go where and when there's space.

Now that the children have grown and we've taken early retirement, we simply avaid busy holiday times, so booking isn't usually necessary.

Always book during school hols to get in where you want rather than where you can.

Hi familyof4gocamp! We always book well in advance so's we've got something to definite to look forward to. We put up a wallplanner, mark up the dates and venues, look at them everytime we pass by. We are semi retired now and have 8 holidays to look forward to. Sad but true luvvly11

 As a term time worker I need to go in school hols so if I want to guarantee the site I want I book.Plus it gives us something to look forward too.

We never booked untill this year, as never realy had problems. Now it seems camping is becoming popular & we struggled for high season on the sights we wanted, and we tend to avoid what might be considered 'popular sites' so we have booked this year.

I just booked for a three day weekend 20th May at (Haven) Haggerston Castle. Folding camper, awning, electric, water tap, 5 adults and two kids, 2 and 4. £37.80. Book early deal. £12.60. per night. Passes for complex incuding swimming pools etc included. £15 petrol makes it about £10 per adult for three days holiday. I think that was worth booking in advance?

Depends on if you want a particular sites or area.  If its in school hols and you arent bothered where then you are sure to find somewhere but if you have particular requirements it would be advisable to book.

I was a bit worried about paying up front and then losing out if we cancelled because of weather, but OH says we'll go rain or shine! 

Have found a site for the May bank holiday week so I'm going to book it, so we'll have something to look forward to!

We book for the school hols and any bank holiday weekends that we want. Then for odd weekends where the weather looks good I tend to look for camping & caravan club rallies and temp holiday sites as they normally have plenty of space.

When we started camping some years ago I imagined just taking off if the weather looked nice...but that just doesn't work at busy times like bank holidays and school holidays. We ended up at less popular sites and we could see why! Weekends in summer before the holidays have been ok and we have just waited till a few days before to book. Saying that we have rarely had brilliant weather and we still enjoy it!

We've always booked in advance regardless of the time of year.  I'd be gutted to get somewhere and find we'd have to turn around (after possibly a long drive) and come home
