Hi there, see the topic below for some Scottish places to think about. The midges are bad in Fort William in the summer but there are some decent repellents available. Last year we spent the whole season in Kippford near Dalbeattie and there are hardly any midges there. Ditto Fife and most of the East coast (midges are worst where there's a lot of greenery and/or rain, hence the west coast midge issue. You don't say when you're thinking about going, but the midges are definitely most prolific June to September - outwith these times you won't be bothered much by them. Depends what you want - if it's the big mountain scenery of the west coast in summer, you might just have to stock up on the repellent :)

As I understand it, Scotland is still part of the UK, therefore the natives are Brits too!!
I think even with the midges, I would risk Scotland. Dorset is beautiful, but Scotland is in a different league! I am so looking forward to my three week stay in Arisaig during June, if I become a midge supper- so be it.
I have always gone to the West Coast before in either May or Sept and never been bothered by midges. The worst midge experience I have suffered, was during June in Snowdonia National park.
It is said that the closer one is to the sea, the less likely one will be bothered by the 'beasties'. Go on, chance it, be brave

Be brave, you might get a week of glorious sunshine and the midge is not too fond of that!
A site that you get a breeze on is definitely best and there's a fair few without upsetting Tiggarsmum ! NOT the Oban CCC site though if coming in the height of the midge season - great spot in a walled garden and therefore very sheltered and with a lot of trees next door. However, there are decent repellents - just keep remembering to apply the one that suits you best and take Piriton if you've suffered badly in the past. And, and I know this sounds daft, get one of those cheap personal fans that run off wee batteries - around £3 ish (more now with extra VAT) - if you get a thunderstorm and the brutes come out in force - they can save your sanity whilst getting under cover!
I love Dorset and have spent great holidays there in the past but Scotland... well, maybe I'm biassed as I live here!
When it comes to Arisaig you can't upset me. If I were to get eaten alive I would still go On the plus side if them pesky midges choose to nibble on me they might regret the rat poison they ingest

Once on holiday in Scotland, I went into a church and was surprized to find a red telephone beside the pulpit. A sign read " Direct line to heaven - calls 10p."
I asked the minister how it was so cheap, and he replied "Well it's only a local call" !
If you want to avoid the worst of the midgies, go early or late in the year, or come to the East coast. Many people think that Scotland only has a West coast, but the locals know better. On the other hand, go to the West and we can enjoy the delights of the East ourselves.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
If you don't like midges ?......stick to the east coast as you don't get them there but if you decide to stay in the west camp away from trees or water . South west don't have as big problem . Try brighouse bay (kirkcudbrightshire)great place for the hole family.
May the sun shine and the drink flow
