With the obscenely high cost of travel, camping / caravanning closer to home might become even more popular.
I have several very good sites within 25 miles - great for 2 or 3 day breaks.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

The nearest campsite was at Little Sea's, Haven Holiday site, which is only two miles/ five minutes drive away. My Sister and her four children came to visit (from Hampshire) at school holiday times, and with both our Husbands working away, we decided to try a spot of camping, but needed a site close by to transport all the gear, and children. It use to take a couple of trips back and forth or ask other members of our family to help join in the fun of erecting the large Khyham tent and have a family picknick.
We camped within a four mile radious of our home, and have tried out most of the local sites, but once on the campsites it always felt a million miles away from home, and the kids enjoyed being able to run around, play games and meet new friends, giving time for us adults to relax for a short while.
Another bonus to camping close to home was when it rained all day, we could nip back home for warmth and shelter, and it was handy for any washing needed doing.

When I was working away from home all week, we used to camp around 10 miles away from work and weekday home so that OH and I could spend some time together but I could still go to work (to protect some of my holiday time).
We spent our week long holiday 7 miles from our proper home last summer and we could have been a million miles away from home. OK we're helped by living in a glorious part of the world but even when we were living in Bristol there were some great sites within an easy travel to work distance.
We're planning to to the same this year, we don't get a huge amount of time away and I don't fancy spending most of a trip in the car travelling!

Many years ago, when booking in at a local Haven Holiday Site (two miles down the road from home) with my Sister and her four children, the young girl behind the counter asked us if we'd ever been on holiday here before and did we actually know the site (as she handed a map to us) ? Sis and I just looked each other and creased up laughing, then had to admit that we'd both actually had worked on site for quite a few years in the past.and that I only lived 2 miles away. Us two sisters had made a pact with each other that we wern't going to mention living close by and definately not that we'd ever worked there, knowing all their ups and downs, ins and outs, nooks and crannies etc.. We also found it amusing bumping in to our old work mates explaning yes we really were on holiday and yes we were sad people.
Also remember that when we turned up on the field with the Khyam tent in a trailer, the site man getting confused saying he didn't realise it was going to be a Trailer tent,we replied that it was only a tent and that we'd also booked electric, he said there was no electric pitches left, then decided to squeeeeeeze us in really tightly in among other tents. Mind you, also remembered that the five day holiday ,plus electric only cost us £66 (£11 each for the whole week) I think they,d made a mistake when we booked , I didn't like to ask for their new 10% local residents discount on top just incase the price went up.

A campsite can be five minutes down the road, yet feel like a million miles away.

We have just had a caravan for 3 nights with their 3 young children, they only lived 35 miles away. They had a really enjoyable time as we have started lambing, and they went for walks with the children. In my eyes it was a very cheap break away for 1/2 term. Not being funny it cost £12.50 a night (with electric) and their food costs would have been the same as at home, the kids had a great time so parents do to!
------------- Visit Llandrindod Wells! Great scenery, walks, cycling, red kites. Ideal for exploring Mid Wales.

We used to use a site regularly that was a ten minute drive away, it was perfect for weekends away, by the time Hubby gets home on a Friday and we've hitched up it'd be mad to travel miles for 2 nights.
We used to store our van on a farm that's about half a mile from here and we once had a couple of nights there too! It ended up being one of our favourite trips, it was snowing and we really enjoyed sitting all cosy in the van watching the snow fall on the fields.
I dont think I'd go for a full week too local though.

We've stayed at Postern Hill (Savernake Forest, Marlborough) which is only about a 45 min tow from home.
I thought it might not feel like we were away for the weekend but it did and the added bonus is that it doesn't take long to travel to
I don't think it matters if it's 15 miles or 150 miles - it's what you make of it and it's better than being at work and/or home!

We live in a terrace of 17 houses in the middle of the countryside and it is lovely - but there are very few kids, so, when my 2 were little, we started going away to places that were close enough for my OH to get back to work but where there were other kids for my 2 to play with. I think once we even went back home for a night as home was nearer the cinema we had gone to, and the weather was orrible, so we went home for a night and then back to the van in the morning.

The advantages of camping near home I see are these:
- You can pop home to feed the cat/pick up anything important you forgot
- You don't have to wonder where the nearest shops are
- You don't have to feel guilty for not exploring your local area and just chilling on a camp site
- You don't waste hours/fuel getting somewhere or coming home
- When you are on the site you feel a million miles away.
It's like backgarden camping but it's down the road instead. I love it, for just weekends. A week might be too much!
