If you are members of the Camping and Caravan Club check the holiday sites, they are generally good value. We have stayed on a couple and found the locations good, but they do not always have showers, toilets and electric, but some do.

Look at the municipal sites. Typical cost/night in low season for motorhome/caravan - £14.50 incl EHU. £16.50 high season.
4 person tent - £11. High season - £12.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Queen Elizabeth campsite in Stonehaven between Dundee and Aberdeen is a good wee site. It's a municipal site so fairly cheap - £11 low season and £12 high season for a tent and 4 people.
I stayed there last year and thoroughly recommend it. It's a stone's throw from the beach and amenities - chip shop, ice cream shop, cafe, arcade, heated open air swimming pool, large play park which are all just outside the gates and the site is only a short 5 minute walk into the town itself.
It's not huge and the tents were all quite close together but the staff were very helpful, toilets clean etc.
Another site not too far away from here is Miltonhaven near St Cyrus, Montrose. This costs £16 per night for 4. More peaceful than Stonehaven as it is in the country. Again it's on the beach and has a small on site shop. Lots of animals on site - ducks, chickens, ponies, cats, sheep, goats etc. A play area for the kids too.
Maybe too far north but handy for visiting Aberdeen or Montrose.
