Bunree, being on the loch, may well have a breeze which will keep the little darlings at bay. ASSS works; you can also try bog myrtle which is available locally. The big freestanding citronella candles you spike in the ground usually protect up to 12 of us sitting around together combined with ASSS outside. It's worthwhile having citronella tea lights (in safe container) in the van for about an hour before bedtime, but keep an eye on them - the gel citronella sticks are much safer if you can find them (and if you do, please post on here!) - this tends to deter night-time bites. VitB complex can help but you need to start well before your holiday and check that there's no reason you shouldn't take it.
If you have EHU, an oscillating fan inside the unit can help if you're going in and out, but make sure that it's facing the door. A friend uses this in his motorhome sometimes.
Finally, try some positive thinking - midgies provide a vast food source for our birds, some plants and spiders etc. which in turn support the food chain.
