Thinking of visiting Northumbria but have no idea of areas. Should we go towards National Park, or head For the Coast. going in August , Hopefully .
Any suggestions appreciated.

We camped at Springhill Farm last August. Great site, great facilities and gorgeous location.

It depends what you are looking for. If you have children? If you like peace and quiet. Quiet country, rivers, or somewhere with a club or pub. My recommendation would be 'Waren' campsite near Bamburgh Castle. We have not stayed there but we live about about 30 miles away and had a drive around Northumberland a few weeks ago to check out campsites and we liked the look of it. It is close to several castles, Holy Island and the Farne Islands. Seahouses is 3 miles away and worth a visit. Alnwick Castle and Gardens are not far off. Rothbury's 'Cragside' stately home of Lord Armstrong was the first house in the world to have electricity is a bit further. Berwick is not far away on the Scottish border. Newcastle Quayside with all it's Bridges, the Castle, the Sage and the Baltic centre. If you like shopping the Gateshead Metro Centre is the largest in Europe. The Roman Wall, Vindolanda and Hexham might be of interest, west of Newcastle.

Yes it all depends on what you are looking for, what you like to do and how long you want to stay.

We've stayed at both the coast and Hadrian's Wall areas in the past and they are equally lovely, with loads to do. We have also booked a site near Kielder Water for the upcoming early May weekend.

I should say that we like fairly basic, quiet sites.

On the coast we stayed near Craster at Dunstan Hill Camping And Caravanning Club Site, which is great. There is a lovely walk direct from the site to the ruins of Dunstanburgh castle and on to Craster where you can get a delicious crab sandwich and chips at the Jolly Fisherman or buy yummy Craster kippers.

The boat trips to the Farne Islands from Seahouses are great; you can see seals and loads of sea birds. Bamburgh Castle is also well worth a visit and the beach there is truly amazing. Alwick is also a nice town to visit. We didn't have time to fit in Lindisfarne (Holy Island) in a long weekend but will definitely be back to do that in the future. The site at Springhill Farm does look great and I think we'll try here next time.

On a separate short trip to Hadrian's Wall we stayed at Hadrian's Wall Campsite. Vindolanda & Housesteads fort are really nearby and excellent, well worth a visit. There are also some lovely walks & a cycle path along the wall itself.

It may be worth considering a split stay - depending on how long you have - and spend some time on the coast and some time in the National Park area to enable you to visit the area around Kielder Water, Hexham and The Wall?... both areas have their merits and are worth visiting! Otherwise the coast is "do-able" from the National Park for a day trip and vice versa (it's about 1.5hrs drive I think).

I hope this helps!

We have always stayed on coast and then had a couple of days touring in land.

The beaches are so unspoilt and quiet.  Lots of things to do.  We have also stayed at CCC site Dunstan Hill which was lovely although busy at weekend (as most sites are).

We had a week at Dunstan Hill last year. Were lucky to have a very hot week at the end of May and loved the site and area.

Highburn House has got to be one of my all time favourites. There is nothing on the site but it's only a 10 minute walk to town with all the facilities you could want, including swimming baths for the rainy days. The beautiful beaches are within an easy car drive and Alnwick Castle is also within easy reach.

The shower block was immaculate when we were there and for the price (I think possibly the cheapest in the area) it's fantastic.

One thing though, we found the ground to be very hard and stony so take some suitable pegs.
